5 Blood Tests Your Doctor Doesn't Order (But Should) Yearly

Do you think annual blood tests are enough? These 5 blood tests that are often missed can point out the risks to your health even before you see any symptoms. Read ahead to know.

Most of us feel reassured after an annual health check-up that includes basic blood tests like CBC, fasting sugar, and cholesterol. However, while the routine tests remain significant, they frequently miss the bigger picture in terms of what is going on inside the body. Medical professionals claim that there are a few important blood tests that are often neglected. These are also a full range of tests that can uncover deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic risks even before the symptoms become too serious.

According to Dr Brunda M S, Senior Consultant - Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, “The yearly practice of basic blood test among people is quite common, yet important tests are mostly missed. These tests help to detect health issues disguised in early stages, thus allowing you to take precautions and maintain good health in the long run.” Read ahead to know which tests she shared with us.

5 Blood Tests Your Doctor Doesn't Order (But Should) Yearly

Here are the five blood tests that your physician may not ask, but should be considered yearly for better preventive care:

1. Vitamin D Test

Vitamin D is much more than a vitamin related to bones. It also palys a major role in improving immune response, regulating mood, muscle strength, and even hormone balance. Despite living in a sunny country (like India), Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common due to indoor lifestyles, sunscreen use, and limited sun exposure.

Symptoms of low Vitamin D levels include bone pain, susceptibility to frequent infections, tiredness, hair loss, and changes in mood such as anxiety or sadness. Dr Brunda highlighted that since the symptoms are normally subtle, a blood test is the only reliable method to assess and correct one’s Vitamin D level in time.

2. Vitamin B12 Test

Vitamin B12 is important for nerve health, brain activity, and production of Red Blood Cells (RBCs). The deficiency is most common in vegetarians, chronic stress sufferers, individuals with gut issues, and long-term antacid or metformin users.

The symptoms of low B12 include, (always) feeling tired, tingling or loss of feeling in extremities, poor focus and memory issues, and anemia. Moreover, since these signs are often associated with stress or ageing, annual testing of B12 can help to avoid permanently damaged nerves caused by ignoring the problem for years.

3. Thyroid Function Tests Beyond TSH

Doctors usually test only TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) during regular check-ups. But, this parameter is not sufficient to understand the full picture of one’s thyroid function. Along with TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 levels should be tested as well to evaluate the actual thyroid functionality.

Dr. Brunda mentioned, “The imbalance of the thyroid gland can lead to weight changes, lack of energy or getting too moody, difficulty in menstrual cycle plus infertility and heart problems.” A thorough thyroid panel examination can help to recognise subtle thyroid dysfunctions early in women especially, so that the health disruption can be avoided.

4. HbA1c Test

Most people think if they have normal fasting blood sugar, they are not diabetic and hence can not be affected by the disease. However, this is not always the case. HbA1c gives a three-month average of your blood sugar, thereby, helping in very early detection of pre-diabetes, through its power of being truly predictive.

Hidden blood sugar peaks and insulin resistance can be found out through this test, which will make it possible to start lifestyle changes before any of the diabetes complications concerned with heart, kidneys, eyes, or nerves affect the patient.

5. Lipid Profile with Triglycerides

Total cholesterol and LDL often take the spotlight, but triglycerides, on the other hand, go unnoticed most of the time. The presence of high triglyceride levels doubles the risk for heart disease, fatty liver, and metabolic syndrome-to name a few.

The factors that link triglycerides to sugar overconsumption, stress, drinking alcohol, and inactivity are very tight. Including triglycerides in your annual lipid profile makes a better measure of the cardiovascular risk.

Importance of These 5 Tests

Dr Brunda shared, “The annual testing can offer a chance to detect the disarray at an early stage. You should always have a conversation with your physician before the test. A few checks done now can save your health from a great deal of trouble later." Preventive health care does not mean taking measures after the onset of disease, it means early identification of silent risks and taking measures accordingly.

Bottomline

Routine tests are important, but they are still not enough. Routine blood tests can detect hidden deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic risks when you add these five blood tests to your annual health check, thereby, allowing you to live a healthier and longer life.
