While many of us are aware that the human body is composed of roughly 60% to 70% water, we often overlook the specific needs of our muscular system. Water actually makes up as much as 75% of our muscle mass. Many of us spend our days sipping on various liquids including soda or energy drinks, package juice and sweetened coffees, under the false impression that all fluids contribute equally to hydration. And this results in muscle dehydration.

While these beverages might temporarily quench your thirst, your muscles can remain internally dehydrated. To gain deeper insight into why internal muscle hydration is vital and foods that help to achieve it, the editorial team of Onlymyhealth reached out to Ms Veena V, Chief Clinical Dietician & HOD - Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru. Continue reading to know what she shared with us.

Why Internal Muscle Hydration is Important

The reason for the importance of internal muscle hydration is that the cells in muscles are composed primarily of water. Giving an example for this Ms Veena V explains, the seamless functioning of our bodies from nerve contractions and blood flow to the uptake of essential nutrients, all depends significantly on cellular water content and flexibility of the cells.

"When muscle cells are sufficiently hydrated, they become more flexible and function more efficiently during physical exertion. Along with this, proper hydration also helps regulate body temperature and significantly reduces the risk of heat exhaustion, cramps, and strains," she further explains. Interestingly, muscular dehydration can increase your rate of fatigue even if you don't feel particularly thirsty.

6 Foods That Naturally Hydrate Your Muscles

Ms Veena highlights that certain foods are powerhouses for muscle hydration because they provide a perfect balance of fluids and electrolytes. Here are six top picks by the nutritionist:

Watermelon: This fruit is a hydration hero, providing high fluid content alongside essential vitamins like Vitamin C to support tissue repair.

Cucumber: Beyond its high water content, cucumbers provide essential electrolytes such as magnesium and calcium, which are vital for muscle contraction.

Coconut Water: Often called nature’s energy drink, coconut provides rapid hydration through a rich profile of electrolytes.

Yogurt: Yogurt is a double-win for muscles. It provides essential fluids while offering high-quality proteins necessary for muscle maintenance in the long run.

Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale and other leafy greens are packed with water and minerals like potassium, which help the body retain moisture where it’s needed most.

Milk: Research suggests milk may be even more hydrating than water due to its unique combination of electrolytes, protein, and fat, which slows down fluid excretion.

How Dehydration Affects Muscle Function

When the body lacks sufficient fluid, the consequences for our physical performance are immediate. Ms Veena shares. "A lack of hydration leads to a decrease in blood flow to the muscles, which in turn reduces the supply of oxygen and vital nutrients." She further mentions how muscle dehydration affects overall functioning:

  • Dehydration causes fatigue, as muscles feel heavier and tire more quickly.
  • Electrolyte imbalances caused by dehydration interfere with muscle signals, increasing the frequency of painful cramps and spasms.
  • Even the recovery process is hindered as dehydration slows the removal of metabolic waste and delays muscle rebuilding, leading to prolonged soreness after exercise.

Common Dietary Mistakes Leading to Poor Hydration

Are you accidentally dehydrating yourself? Ms Veena V highlights that because lack of knowledge about our daily diet we put ourself in such conditions:

  • Substituting Water with Sugary or Caffeinated Drinks may feel refreshing but high sugar and caffeine levels can actually act as diuretics, increasing fluid loss.
  • Diets heavy in processed snacks can interfere with your body’s fluid balance, forcing cells to give up water to neutralise excess salt.
  • Skipping fruits and leafy greens means you miss out on structured water, your rich protein source and minerals that help your body absorb fluids effectively.
  • Missing meals or protein intake can put you at a higher risk of chronic dehydration, as your body lacks the nutrients required to manage fluid distribution properly.

Bottomline

Hydration is about more than just drinking water when you feel a dry throat. It is about feeding your muscles the fluids and minerals they need to move, recover, and manage overall wellbeing. By swapping sugary drinks for water rich foods and staying consistent with your fluid intake, even when you do not feel thrusty you can keep your muscles flexible and cramp-free.
