Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated on Flights, Road Trips, and Winter Getaways

Traveling, by whatever means, either through air, road, or to a snug winter spot, generally disturbs the daily habits, including the water-drinking habit. Dehydration might not be noticed as it happens sneakingly amongst long security lines, busy itineraries, cold weather, and dry cabin air. However, it is important to keep one's hydration level up during the trip since it affects the body in various ways like the increase in energy levels, good digestion, skin health, and overall wellness.

According to Divya Gandhi, Dietitian and Nutritionist at Divya Gandhi's Diet & Nutrition Clinic, Delhi, hydration should be the main subject of attention during traveling. She clarified that small and conscious habits can help get rid of tiredness, headaches, dry skin, and even jet lag. Read ahead to know the expert-approved  tips on how to ensure you are well-hydrated during your upcoming trips.

How to Stay Hydrated while Flying

Air travel is one of the most dehydrating forms of travel. The humidity in cabin air is very low which results in the human body losing more water than it normally does.

Divya suggested carrying a refillable water bottle, emptying it before security, and filling it once you’re after the checkpoint. This simple habit ensures you always have water within reach.

Additionally, she shared to go for the snacks that have a lot of water like fruits, nuts, and energy bars instead of the salty or processed foods which will make you thirsty.

Another key tip is to stay away from caffeine and soda as these drinks can make dehydration worse. Water without any flavour or herbal tea should be your preferred choices. Finally, it is not only the inside body that needs hydration, the use of a hydrating face mist and lip balm to fight the dryness caused by cabin air.

Tips to Staying Hydrated on Road Trips

Road trips usually come with a lot of sitting, irregular meals, and reduced water intake, especially if you want to cut down on stops.

In order to tackle this, Divya advised packing a reusable water bottle and keeping it within arm’s reach. Refill it at rest stops, cafes, or fuel stations. For people who get bored with plain water, adding lemon, lime, or cucumber to water can make it more appealing and thus can lead to increased intake.

Smart snacking is another way to help. Instead of salty chips, go for water-rich fruits and vegetables and energy-giving snacks. Also, take breaks every few hours, not only to stretch but also to hydrate, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Simple Hydration During Winter Trips

Cold weather can be deceptive. People won’t usually think of drinking water as necessary but the air in winter, especially in hotels or cabins, can be very dry.

Divya recommended people to drink hot water, herbal teas or warm lemon water that are very pleasant and still contribute to hydration. If you use a humidifier in your rooms, it will help prevent moisture loss from your skin and respiratory system.

Skin hydration is very important too. Make it a rule to apply a thick moisturiser and lip balm every day to prevent the skin from drying and cracking. “If we look at the diet aspect, then during winter travel, soups, stews, and fruits can be an excellent hydration-friendly foods,” she added.

General Hydration Tips for All Travel

Divya insisted on regularity no matter where you go. Instead of drinking water when you feel thirsty, she advises that you do so constantly, as thirst often signals dehydration at a late stage.

Monitoring bodily signals is another clue. Pale yellow or clear urine are usually signs of good hydration. Also, avoid all carbonated drinks containing sugar and stick to either plain water or unsweetened tea for hydration with no extra calories.

Bottomline

Travel does not necessarily lead to dehydration. By being mindful of your drinking, eating hydrating foods, and using a few simple tools, you will stay fresh, lively, and healthy wherever you travel.
