Body odour can change with age, even if your hygiene routine has stayed the same. A smell that was never noticeable earlier in life may become more obvious around middle age or later. This does not automatically mean poor hygiene.
Ageing changes the skin, its oils and the way certain compounds are produced on its surface. One compound in particular, called 2-nonenal, has been linked to age-related changes in body odour. But there is more to the story than one chemical. Here is why body odour can change with age, what may make it stronger and what you can actually do about it.
Why Does Body Odour Change With Age?
Dr Karuna Malhotra, Cosmetic Skin Clinic, New Delhi, explains, “There's a specific, identified compound behind much of this: 2-nonenal, an unsaturated aldehyde first identified by Japanese researchers in 2001.”
The original research found 2-nonenal in older participants aged 40 and above. It also found that omega-7 fatty acids and lipid peroxides on the skin increased with age and were linked to the presence of 2-nonenal.
Regular body odour usually develops when bacteria on the skin break down substances in sweat and skin secretions. But aging can add another chemical process to the mix.
Importantly, this is not simply the smell of sweat.

Dr Malhotra says, “It's genuinely distinct from regular body odour, which comes mainly from bacteria interacting with sweat. This is an oxidative skin-chemistry process, not a hygiene issue.”
What Is 2-Nonenal And Why Does It Increase With Age?
According to Dr Malhotra, 2-nonenal is an oily compound produced when certain fatty acids on the skin undergo oxidation.
Two age-related changes appear to contribute:
- Omega-7 fatty acids on the skin's surface can increase.
- The skin's antioxidant defences can become less effective with age.
- This creates conditions that favour lipid peroxidation. One of the resulting compounds can be 2-nonenal.
According to UCLA Health, 2-nonenal creates a distinct musty, grassy, or dusty scent. As people age, skin produces more omega-7 fatty acids that react with oxygen to form this compound. Because 2-nonenal easily turns into gas, it floats into the air and sticks to clothes and bedding. Since it is oil-based, normal soap and water cannot easily wash it away.
This supports the idea that age-related body odour is influenced by skin chemistry, rather than simply how often someone bathes.
Why Can The Smell Stay Even After A Shower?
This is one of the less obvious parts of age-related body odour. Dr Malhotra explains, “2-nonenal is lipophilic, or oil-based, while standard soap and water are designed to remove water-soluble compounds.”

That means ordinary washing may not completely remove it. The compound can also remain on fabrics. Clothing, towels and bedding that repeatedly come into contact with the skin may therefore hold onto the smell.
This does not mean someone is unclean. It means the chemistry of the odour is different from the usual smell produced by sweat.
Can Diet Change Age-Related Body Odour?
Possibly, although the evidence is still limited. A small 2021 J Diet Suppl. Study looked at skin volatile organic compounds in 14 middle-aged and older adults. After seven days of consuming New Zealand blackcurrant powder, researchers found that emissions of several compounds, including 2-nonenal, were more than 25% lower compared with the control period.
This is interesting, but it does not prove that eating blackcurrants or other antioxidant-rich foods will prevent age-related body odour. The study was small and short. More research is needed before specific foods can be recommended as a treatment.
What Can You Do If Your Body Odour Has Changed?
The goal is not to wash more aggressively. In fact, over-scrubbing can irritate the skin and damage its protective barrier.
Dr Malhotra recommends focusing on practical measures that target the oily nature of the compound and reduce factors that may increase oxidation.

You can try:
- Use a gentle cleanser that can remove excess oil without stripping the skin.
- Wash clothing, towels and bedding regularly.
- Change clothes after sweating.
- Avoid smoking.
- Protect exposed skin from excessive sunlight.
- Avoid aggressive scrubbing.
- Maintain a balanced diet containing antioxidant-rich foods.
- Keep the skin moisturised if it is becoming dry with age.
Some products containing persimmon extract are marketed for 2-nonenal because compounds in persimmon have been investigated for their ability to reduce this odour. However, evidence for consumer skincare products is still limited.
When Should A Change In Body Odour Be Checked By A Doctor?
A gradual change over years is usually different from a sudden and unexplained change.
See a doctor if body odour changes suddenly or is accompanied by:
- Unexplained weight loss or gain
- Persistent fatigue
- Excessive sweating
- Fever or other signs of infection
- New skin changes or a rash
- A major change after starting a medication
A sudden change does not automatically mean something is wrong. But it is worth checking if there are other new symptoms.
