Hereditary hair loss can start surprisingly early, sometimes even in your 20s, but catching the signs early and taking action can really make a difference. Read ahead to kow.

Hair loss is normally a natural process of ageing, but when it happens sooner than anticipated, it may be concerning. One of the most prevalent types of hair loss, is hereditary baldness, also referred to as androgenetic alopecia, and it plagues millions of women and men globally. However, at what age does it normally begin, and what are the warning signs to look out for? We consulted Dr Bhumesh Tyagi, Consultant, General Medicine and Physician, Shardacare, Health City, Noida, to simplify it, and here is what he shared with us.

Usual Onset of Hereditary Baldness

As reported by dermatologists, hereditary baldness may start as early as the late 20s to early 30s in men, although most apparent thinning tends to occur in the mid-to-late 20s and 30s. Women tend to start noticing thinning around age 40 or 50, although some notice changes sooner, particularly following hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause.

Early Signs to Watch Out For

Here are some early warning signs of hereditary baldness include:

  • For Men: Thinning at the crown, a receding hairline, or overall lower hair density.
  • For Women: Widening of the part, thinning at the top of the scalp in general, or excessive shedding.

These alterations typically progress gradually, and it is simple to overlook the initial stages until substantial thinning has happened.

Role of Genetics In Hereditary Baldness

Genetic baldness is caused by genetic sensitivity to androgens (male hormones), which reduce hair follicle sizes over time. If baldness occurs in your family, on one or both sides, you could be more likely to develop it. However, the exact severity and age can differ considerably even among relatives.

Can You Slow Hereditary Baldness Down?

Although you cannot reverse your genetic makeup, Dr Tyagi stressed that early detection is important. Topical minoxidil, oral medications, low-level laser therapy, and dietary and scalp care measures can all slow hair loss and preserve the hair that remains.
