Almost everyone has swallowed a piece of chewing gum by accident at some point. It is often followed by a moment of panic and the old warning that it stays in your stomach for seven years. But is there any truth to that? The short answer: no, not really. What happens to gum when it enters one's mouth? Here is what a doctor has to say about its passage through your body and when it's time to start getting stressed out.

Does Swallowed Gum Really Stay in Your Stomach?

Dr Aravinda S N, Lead Consultant, Internal Medicine, at Aster RV Hospital, Bangalore, says swallowing chewing gum "is something people complain about a lot, especially with kids, but most of the time it ends up being harmless." He also debunks the seven-year myth and claims that it is not true. Gum cannot be digested, but it doesn't stay still. It continues to pass through the digestive system and eventually leaves the body (typically in a few days).

What Happens to Gum Once You Swallow It?

According to Dr Aravinda, once gum is swallowed, it follows the same path as food, just without being properly broken down. Here's what happens along the way:

  • The gum goes down the food pipe and into the stomach.
  • Digestive acids and enzymes break down the softening agents, flavouring and sweeteners present in the gum.
  • The gum base is a synthetic or natural polymer, which is resistant and not broken down properly.
  • It then enters the intestine, where it is transported by peristalsis, which is the normal wave-like muscle action of the gut.
  • It goes through the large intestine in the next couple of days and exits the body with other undigested material.

Is Swallowing Gum Actually Harmful?

For most healthy adults and older children, swallowing a single piece of gum "doesn't usually bring any health issues," according to Dr Aravinda, and it generally doesn't need medical treatment. It's a common, largely harmless mishap rather than a medical emergency.

According to a 2025 study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials Letters, researchers found that chewing gum sheds tiny plastic pieces into saliva. Both natural and synthetic gums released similar amounts.

Most particles came loose in the first few minutes, simply from chewing, not from digestion. This means that as gum moves through your body, it isn't only the gum base left behind. Some microplastics may also enter your system along the way.

When Can Swallowing Gum Become a Problem?

While rare, there are situations where swallowed gum can cause trouble. Dr Aravinda explains that problems are more likely if:

  • Someone swallows a large amount of gum, or several pieces in a short time
  • Gum is swallowed alongside non-food items, such as coins or seeds
  • The person is a young child, since their digestive tract is smaller
  • Someone already has existing bowel problems or has had intestinal surgery before

In these situations, it can rarely set the stage for an intestinal blockage.

Warning Signs of an Intestinal Blockage

If a blockage does occur, the body usually gives clear signals. According to Dr Aravinda, these include:

  • Strong abdominal pain
  • Ongoing vomiting
  • A visibly bloated belly
  • Trouble passing stools or gas
  • Constipation

If any of these symptoms appear after swallowing gum, it's important to seek medical attention quickly.

Should You Be Worried If You Swallow Gum by Accident?

Not really. Most of the time, if you swallow gum by accident, it is not something to worry about, but, as Dr Aravinda said, “it is wise not to swallow gum regularly.” For instance, parents should supervise their children when they chew gum and ensure that it is thrown away correctly at the end of the chewing session, instead of being swallowed on a regular basis.

Conclusion

It's okay to chew a piece of gum from time to time. Your body takes it through, and it just goes out, similar to all other undigested material. However, if the belly is still painful, you keep vomiting or have difficulty defecating following gum ingestion, it's advised to consult your doctor immediately, just to be safe.

FAQ

  • 1. Can chewing gum help with digestion in any way?

Chewing gum has been known to stimulate saliva production, which could help with the initial phases of digestion. But this effect is small, and chewing gum doesn't necessarily act as a digestive aid.
  • 2. Is it safe for children to chew gum at all?

When children have the ability to chew or swallow the pieces of chewing gum, it is not a harmful substance. The real danger is with younger children who might swallow it multiple times or with other items, and it would be prudent to supervise their use of gum, not to eliminate it completely.
