Dr Sukansha Kulshrestha, Consultant Cosmetologist at the Institute of Facial Aesthetic Medicine (IFAM), Lucknow, explains, “Many people underestimate how everyday habits contribute to hair fall. For instance, using heat styling tools regularly without protection damages the hair shaft, making hair brittle and prone to breakage. Tight hairstyles like ponytails or braids cause pulling on hair roots, which over time can lead to traction alopecia, a form of permanent hair loss.”
She adds, “Improper hair washing, either too often or not enough, can disrupt scalp balance. Over-washing strips natural oils, while under-washing leads to dirt buildup, causing inflammation. Both hurt hair growth. Balanced nutrition and stress management are often overlooked but crucial factors impacting hair health.”

Stress was strongly linked to hair loss, and higher stress levels were associated with more severe hair shedding.

“Hair health depends a lot on what you eat,” says Dr Kulshrestha. “Protein forms the building blocks of hair. Iron helps oxygenate follicles. Vitamins like D and biotin strengthen strands. If your diet lacks these, hair becomes weak and falls out. Avoid excessive junk food, sugary snacks, and highly processed items; they hurt scalp circulation and hair quality,” she added.
