Does Aerated Drinks Cause Hair Loss? How Cold Drinks and Junk Food Choices Reflect Our Health

Many people regularly drink aerated drinks like sodas and eat junk food. These items are easy to find and taste good, so they are hard to resist. However, while they may be tasty, they can harm your health in ways you might not know.

One surprising issue is that these sugary drinks and processed foods might cause hair loss and affect overall health. An expert explains that "it's mainly the sugar that harms your body." What happens to your skin and hair often shows how well your body is functioning inside.

How Aerated Drinks Lead To Hair Loss?

Dr Abhishek Pilani, Celebrity Dermatologist, Founder, Assure Clinic, Mumbai, strongly advises against consuming aerated drinks. He explained, "Whatever reflects on your skin and hair is a reflection of your internal health." According to him, if your body is healthy on the inside, it will show on your skin and hair. However, poor dietary choices, including junk food and sugary drinks, can harm your body internally and lead to issues like hair loss.

A study published in the journal Nutrients found a significant link between sugary drinks and hair loss. Drinking even one soda per day was associated with a higher risk of hair loss. Sugary beverages can increase insulin levels in the body, disrupting hormonal balance, which may trigger hair loss. Aerated drinks may negatively impact hair health in several ways:

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Eating too much sugar raises insulin resistance, which disrupts the hormones needed for healthy hair growth.
  • Nutrient Deficiency: When you consume too much sugar, you have less space in your diet for nutrient-rich foods. This deprives your body of the vitamins and minerals necessary for strong hair.
  • Inflammation: Sugary drinks can cause inflammation in your body, which may damage hair follicles over time.

How Junk Food Choices Reflect Our Health?

A study on PubMed showed that eating junk food regularly can harm your health. Junk food is high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats, which can lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It also lacks important nutrients, causing poor nutrition, digestive problems, and mental health issues. Eating too much junk food can upset hormones and affect children's growth. The food we eat plays a big role in our overall health and well-being.

What Are the Reasons for Hair Loss?

Hair loss can happen for many reasons and below are a few common causes.

  • Genetics: Hair loss often runs in families, like male or female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).
  • Health Problems: Alopecia areata happens when the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing patches of hair loss.
  • Thyroid Issues: An overactive or underactive thyroid gland can make hair thin.
  • Hormonal Changes: Conditions like PCOS or menopause can lead to hair loss.
  • Lack of Nutrients: Not getting enough protein, iron, zinc, or vitamins can weaken hair and cause it to shed.
  • Stress: Physical or emotional stress, such as after surgery or childbirth, can temporarily increase hair loss.
  • Medications: Certain medicines for cancer, depression, high blood pressure, and other conditions may cause hair loss as a side effect.
