Cold drinks like sodas and fizzy beverages are a popular choice for many people, especially during hot weather or social gatherings. Their sweet, refreshing taste makes them a go-to drink for kids and adults alike. However, there have been concerns about whether these drinks might harm our bones over time. Many wonder if the ingredients in cold drinks affect bone strength or calcium levels. To clear up these doubts, we spoke with Dr Prathik Hegde, Consultant Orthopaedic, Bangalore Hospitals, Bangalore, who explains what science says about cold drinks and bone health.

Dr Prathik Hegde explains how the consumption of cold drinks, including sodas and other carbonated beverages, has been a topic of interest in relation to bone health. He says, “The consumption of cold drinks, especially sodas, has been studied for its possible effects on bones. Many people worry that the ingredients in these drinks could weaken bones over time.”

Calcium Absorption

One of the biggest concerns is about calcium. Dr. Hegde explains, “One of the most debated aspects is whether the phosphoric acid found in many soft drinks affects calcium absorption. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2006) concluded that increased soft drink consumption was associated with lower bone mineral density in adolescent girls. The hypothesis is that high consumption of cola drinks may lead to a lower dietary calcium intake, ultimately affecting bone density.” This means that drinking a lot of colas could make it harder for your body to get enough calcium, which is needed for strong bones.

Carbonation and Bone Health

People often worry about the bubbles in cold drinks. Dr Hegde says, “Carbonated beverages may contain carbonic acid, which forms when carbon dioxide is dissolved in water. While carbonation itself doesn't seem to negatively impact bone health, it’s primarily the other ingredients (like phosphoric acid in colas) and the displacement of healthier options (like milk) in the diet that are of concern.” So, it’s not really the fizz that’s the problem, but what else is in the drink and what you’re not drinking instead.

Phosphoric Acid and Osteoporosis

Cola drinks contain phosphoric acid. Dr. Hegde points out, “High levels of phosphoric acid, particularly in cola drinks, can lead to an imbalance in the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, which is critical for bone health. Research published in Bone (2001) provides evidence that elevated phosphorus levels can result in increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, which may lead to calcium depletion from bones, especially in people with inadequate calcium intake.” In simple words, too much phosphorus and not enough calcium can make your bones weaker.

Many sodas also have caffeine. Dr Hegde says, “Many cold drinks, particularly sodas, also contain caffeine, which can negatively affect bone health. Caffeine may promote calcium excretion through urine, potentially leading to lower calcium levels in the body.” This means caffeine can make your body lose calcium, making bones more fragile over time.

Dietary Displacement

When you drink more sodas, you might drink less milk or water. Dr Hegde explains, “Cold drink consumption can displace healthier beverage choices like milk and water. The regular intake of high-sugar, high-calorie drinks can lead to a diet low in essential nutrients that support bone health, including calcium and vitamin D. So, drinking too many cold drinks can mean you miss out on nutrients your bones need.
