There is a misconception that only older women struggle with vaginal dryness. People believe that this is an issue which can be solely related to menopause. But let us clear the confusion for you. Vaginal dryness is a common issue among many women who are in their 20s and 30s as well. There are various factors that cause it: hormonal changes, stress or certain medications. To know more about it, read ahead.

Let us take a look at what Dr Lavanya Kiran, Director and Lead Consultant, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, KIMS Hospitals, Electronic City, Bengaluru, has to say about this.

What Causes Vaginal Dryness In Your 20s and 30s?

Let us begin by understanding what vaginal dryness is. Dr Kiran says, “Vaginal dryness is a condition that could affect you even in your 20s and 30s and is not always associated with menopause.”

So what causes this condition? Answering this, the expert shares, “The first cause could be hormonal changes, especially during the menstrual period, pregnancy, lactation or the use of some hormonal birth control methods. Other causes include stress, anxiety and insufficient arousal. Some drugs such as some antihistamines and antidepressants could also be factors, as well as irritation from perfumed soap, vaginal douche, wash or other similar products.”

A 2019 study, published in the The EPMA Journal, states that many people link vaginal dryness strictly with older women who are entering menopause. But the reality is it is actually a common issue that affects a significant number of women in their 20s and 30s.

The study adds that one of the primary physiological causes behind younger women struggling with vaginal dryness is hormonal fluctuation. This can be caused during breastfeeding or as a result of using certain anti-oestrogen medications, cold medications, or specific antidepressants.

Apart from hormones, lifestyle and whole-body factors also play a massive role; for instance, dehydration from simply not drinking enough water can also be a major trigger for vaginal dryness. Moreover, intense psychological stress, anxiety, and a lack of adequate sexual foreplay can physically prevent normal vaginal lubrication from occurring. Also, underlying vascular issues like conditions that cause excessive narrowing of the blood vessels (vasoconstriction), can restrict vital blood flow to the vaginal walls, severely harming the body's natural ability to produce moisture.

Vaginal Dryness In Your 20s and 30s: Warning Signs

On this note, Dr Kiran shares some of the symptoms of vaginal dryness in your 20s and 30s:

  • Itchiness.
  • Burning sensation.
  • Pain during sex.
  • Soreness and tightness in the vagina
  • Sometimes pain upon insertion and slight blood after sexual intercourse can also be a sign.

“Vaginal dryness should not be left untreated, especially when accompanied with abnormal vaginal discharge, foul smell, blood after sexual intercourse, pain in the pelvis area, severe itching and burning,” warns the expert.

Adding to this, the aforementioned study noted that early warning signs of vaginal dryness is important for younger women. This can help them address the issue before it severely affects their daily lives.

It further says that the most immediate and noticeable symptoms usually consist of physical skin irritation, persistent burning, or an uncomfortable itching sensation in the vaginal area, which is not caused by a bacterial infection. During sexual activity, this lack of natural lubrication usually causes painful intercourse, medically called dyspareunia. This pain can quickly spike into a psychological barrier, leading to severe anxiety around intimacy and a drastic reduction in sexual desire altogether. Even outside the bedroom, severe vaginal dryness can make mundane daily activities extremely uncomfortable, causing pain while sitting, standing, exercising, or even playing sports.

Tips To Deal With Vaginal Dryness

Dr Kiran shares that you can deal with vaginal dryness by using a water-based lubricant during sex and avoiding fragranced intimate products. “If symptoms persist, recur frequently or interfere with daily life or sexual activity, a gynaecological evaluation can help identify the cause and guide appropriate treatment,” adds the expert.

Shedding light on this, the aforementioned study shares that vaginal dryness at a young age needs a combination of lifestyle adjustments, psychological awareness, and sometimes medical intervention. On this note, it shares some tips to deal with vaginal dryness:

  • First and foremost, make sure that you are drinking plenty of fluids every single day. Use high-quality, artificial vaginal moisturising gels and water-based lubricants. This can provide immediate and effective relief during intimacy and daily life.
  • It is also highly recommended to communicate openly with your partner to make sure extended foreplay is involved during intimacy.
  • Actively managing your mental health, practicing relaxation techniques, and minimising daily anxiety can also have immense positive effects on your physical symptoms.
  • If you smoke cigarettes, quitting is highly advised. This is because smoking can negatively affect blood flow and hormonal balance, worsening the dryness in your vaginal area.
  • You should also consult your current medications with a doctor.
  • Avoiding harsh vaginal douching products is important. This is because they can completely disrupt your natural vaginal microbiome and acidity, removing its vital moisture.
  • In some cases, a gynecologist may recommend low-dose hormonal creams, if natural methods fail.
  • Regular medical check-ups can help maintain a healthy vaginal environment.

The study concludes that you should not ignore the warning signs; this is because early treatment not only restores comfort and sexual intimacy but also prevents long-term complications such as chronic urinary tract or vaginal infections.
