People dealing with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) often face various challenges, such as pain and fatigue. But did you know they face problems while travelling too? The condition, which causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, can be aggravated by travel-related factors, such as prolonged sitting, changes in climate, and disrupted routines. We spoke to Dr Anup Khatri, Senior Consultant- Orthopedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, who listed measures you should follow before or during travelling to ease the symptoms of this condition.
Essential Factors to Plan a Pain-Free Trip
Here are some tips shared by Dr Khatri that people with RA should follow to plan a safe and pain-free trip:
- You should ensure to pack the recommended medication as prescribed by the doctor. Also, carry prescriptions and look for nearby chemists or pharmacies to be able to stock whatever you need.
- Opt for transport that offers enough legroom.
- Try to plan for rest and breaks from time to time.
- Make sure to book hotels that have elevators and comfortable beds so that you don’t have to struggle with pain.
- Opt for supportive shoes, and lightweight bags, and avoid extreme temperatures that may trigger joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.
- Don’t go for places that involve hiking or a lot of walking as this can lead to exhaustion. Try to get enough rest.
- Keep emergency contacts handy and stay informed about local healthcare options so that you can reach out if required.

How can people with RA prepare their bodies for long flights or car rides?
Long flights or car rides can be challenging for those with RA, so preparation in advance is key. According to the Arthritis Foundation, road trips can be stressful and tense, which can exacerbate physical discomfort and potentially trigger an arthritis flare-up.
“One should stay hydrated and stretch regularly while travelling. Also, avoid travelling to extreme cold temperatures. Use pillows or cushions for support, wear loose clothing, and take prescribed medications without fail,” advised Dr Khatri.
What medications or treatments should individuals with RA pack when travelling?
“When travelling, people with RA should pack all prescribed medications, including pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, and any biologics or injections that they have been advised by the doctor. You should also carry heat patches for pain relief. Keeping medications and a prescription in a carry-on ensures easy access and manages pain and swelling without any problem,” added Dr Khatri.
How to manage fatigue and pain while travelling?
Dr Khatri listed some tips for RA patients to manage fatigue and pain:
- Plan breaks every 3-4 hours
- Stay hydrated by drinking at least 2-3 litres of water
- Stretch often while sitting or getting out of the car
- Take medications on time
- Use supportive gear
- Avoid overexertion to manage fatigue and pain
