Menstrual pain and aches are experienced by many individuals, with symptoms that range from cramps to back pain and general discomfort all over. Of the many methods available for managing menstrual pain, hot water bottles and heating patches have become popular among women for ease of use. But how do they alleviate pain or discomfort and how can you use them? To shed light on the same, we spoke to our expert Dr Lakshmi Prasanna, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Vijayawada, who listed the scientific basis, benefits, and usage of heating pads and their application during menstruation.
Benefits of Heating Patches and Pads
According to 2018 research, it was found that heat effectively reduces pain and, when used alongside Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), speeds up the time it takes to experience noticeable relief. It is recommended to apply heat at approximately 39°C (102°F) to the lower abdomen or back for up to 8–12 hours. Dr Prasanna listed the benefits of heating patches and pads as follows:
Pain Relief
Heating patches and pads deliver direct pain relief by relaxing the muscles around the abdomen. This has been done to aid the uterine muscle contractions which cause cramps by producing heat in that region.
Improved Blood Flow
When there is an increase in the flow of blood to the area, it can reduce the accumulation of substances in the body that cause pain and therefore promote healing through heat therapy.

Non-Invasive and Drug-Free
"In contrast to medicine, heat pads, and patches provide an alternative that does not involve surgery or the use of drugs in period pain management. Thus, these methods are appropriate for people who do not want to take drugs or individuals who have been having side effects from analgesics," said Dr Prasanna.
Convenience
Heating patches are small and can be put on secretly under clothes, therefore they provide uninterrupted comfort all through the day. While not as portable, electric heating pads are helpful for home use.
Scientific Basis
“Scientific research supports the effectiveness of heat therapy for menstrual cramps. Studies have shown that during menstruation, pain can be significantly reduced and comfort improved by using heating pads or hot compresses”, added Dr Prasanna. Heat works by:
- Relaxing Muscles: The smooth muscles in the uterus are relaxed by heat that reduces the contractions that lead to cramps.
- Stimulating Thermoreceptors: When heating is applied, it will stimulate thermoreceptors in the skin that will then transmit signals blocking any feeling of pain to the brain.
- Enhancing Blood Flow: Enhanced circulation promotes the removal of inflammatory substances and provides oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area, relieving pain and facilitating recovery.
How to Use Heating Patches and Pads?
Heating Patches
“To utilise heating plasters, strip the backing and place the sticky face on your lower stomach or back, as per the location of the pain. Generally, these patches give heat for 8-12 hours which means they can be used all day to redress discomfort. However, ensure that you have clean and dry skin before putting them on, and don’t use them on rashes or injured skin,” explained Dr Prasanna.
Heating Pads
To apply a heating pad, you should put it either on your abdomen or lower back in the setting for high or low temperatures to avoid burning yourself. Don’t forget to take breaks every 15-20 minutes so as not to heat excessively.
When using a heating pad, keep it at medium or low temperatures otherwise you may burn yourself. Also, avoid sleeping off with the heating pad still on because that too might lead to severe burns or even doing anything that can cause heat retention like lying down when using a heating pad.
Bottomline
Dr Prasanna concluded, “Pads and patches that heat are a secure, effective and handy manner of managing the discomfort related to menstruation. Their capacity to deliver targeted relief without resorting to drugs has made them common among women looking for comfort during their periods. It is necessary to follow the guidelines on how they should be used and take all the necessary care in order not to end up having any side effects just like with any other form of treatment.”
