Under the current leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab has embarked on a new journey in the power sector. The state government has set an ambitious target under the “Roshan Punjab” project: it aims to turn Punjab into India’s first state to be free from power cuts. More than ₹5,000 crores are being invested in this endeavor to ensure 24-hour seamless supply for industries, farmers, and common consumers.

Chief Minister Mann asserted that the initiative was not related to mere reform in the power sector but was a historic step to strengthen Punjab's economic backbone. Today, the industries in Punjab get the fourth lowest power tariff in the country, while the agricultural sector continues to draw uninterrupted electricity. Voltage fluctuations and other issues would now be a thing of the past with the "Roshan Punjab" project, and special attention is being given to strengthening the power network in rural and remote areas.
Modernization of the LT network, that is, replacement of old wires and raising of hanging lines besides sealing of open meter boxes to ensure public safety, is underway in 13 municipal corporations. The project was first implemented as a pilot in Ludhiana's western sub-division and has been expanded across the state.
A state-of-the-art call centre has been operationalized in Mohali for consumer convenience, where 180 employees work round the clock to address the complaints related to electricity.
In another historic move, the state government has, for the first time, bought a private power plant, Goindwal, which has been renamed the Sri Guru Amardas Ji Thermal Power Plant. Chief Minister Mann expressed, "Electricity is the lifeblood of our economy, and Punjab is now on the path to becoming self-reliant in this crucial sector." The Roshan Punjab initiative isn't just about bringing light; it symbolizes a new chapter of transparent governance and committed public service, illuminating the way toward a brighter and stronger Punjab.
