Energy Revolution in Punjab: Bhagwant Mann Government Turns Dream of a 'Roshan Punjab' into Reality

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab is seeing unprecedented transformation in the energy sector. Before the Mann government came to power, the state's PowerCom used to be burdened with heavy debt. However, the Mann administration has successfully paid off ₹2,000 crore of that debt, pulling the state out of this crisis. Today, Punjab is making strides toward becoming self-sufficient and stable in its power sector.

Launched in July 2022, the free electricity program offers up to 600 units of power and has enabled 90% of households in the state to cut their electricity bills down to nothing. This initiative not only offered much-needed relief to the public but also guaranteed a steady 24-hour power supply for industries and farmers. Punjab now ranks fourth in the country for offering electricity at one of the lowest rates.

To shore up energy supply, the government reopened the Pachhwara coal mines to ensure an uninterrupted supply of coal. Punjab made history in buying a private thermal power plant for the first time-the GVK Company’s plant in Goindwal Sahib-for ₹1,080 crore and has renamed it Shri Guru Amardas Ji Thermal Plant, symbolic of both energy self-sufficiency and cultural pride.

The Mann government has spent ₹5,000 crore on power sector reforms. As part of the “Roshan Punjab Project”, the target is uninterrupted round-the-clock electricity supply across the state by the next year. In 13 municipal corporations, the electricity network is being modernized: naked and dangling wires are being replaced, open meter boxes are being sealed and safety is being prioritized.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, "For the first time, a government in Punjab has purchased private property, while previous governments were busy selling public assets."

Today, ‘Roshan Punjab’ is not a scheme alone; it stands for an energy revolution where electricity is not merely a convenience but a mark of self-reliance and dignity.
