Zero Electricity Bill: Transforming Household Budgets, Empowering Happy Homes

In a groundbreaking move, the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, took a significant step in July 2022 by launching a scheme that offers domestic consumers 300 units of free electricity each month. This initiative has truly become a source of hope for many households in the region. The move has emerged as a financial relief and self-reliance for millions of families across Punjab.

Under this scheme, almost 90% of households have nil electricity bills. Earlier, people were burdened by increasing monthly electricity costs, but now they are able to use that saved money for their children’s education, healthcare, and household needs. Consumers like Harjeet Kaur from Ludhiana shared, “We no longer get an electricity bill; the money we save now goes toward our daughter’s education.”

It’s not just domestic consumers who have benefited; farmers have also received major relief from this initiative. In fact, they get 24 hours of uninterrupted electricity for irrigation, thereby reducing costs related to diesel and generators. Such a step has proved to be beneficial for both agricultural productivity and environmental protection.

It has laid emphasis on strengthening the power supply, investing about ₹5,000 crore to ensure zero power cuts and uninterrupted energy supply to all categories of consumers.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, "Electricity is not a luxury-it is the right of every citizen." His policy is thus not only providing relief but is taking Punjab toward energy self-dependency. Today, every home in Punjab shines bright, reflecting the happiness and confidence of the common people in this new era of light.
