Kim Kardashian Once Revealed the Impact of a Plant-Based Diet on Her Psoriasis Management: Doctor Explains Is It Really Helpful

Kim Kardashian has been one of the most vocal celebrities regarding her lifestyle and fitness. The celeb was diagnosed with psoriasis, a chronic skin condition she has dealt with since 2011, and she detailed how a plant-based diet helped her cure the disease. It is an autoimmune condition characterised by red, inflamed patches of skin covered with silvery scales. In her journey to manage this condition, she discovered that adopting a plant-based diet significantly controlled her symptoms.

Detailing how the plant-based diet helped with psoriasis, we reached out to Dr Teena Singh, a facial aesthetics expert, at Dr. Teena’s aesthetics & cosmetology centre.

What Is Psoriasis?

“Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body produces highly reactive cells which hampers the overall body’s immune system”, as per Dr. Teena Singh. It is a long-lasting skin condition that happens when the body's immune system causes skin cells to grow too quickly. This leads to red, scaly patches on the skin. It is not contagious, meaning you cannot catch it from someone else, and it can affect people of all ages.

Psoriasis often appears on areas like the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. The severity can vary; some people have just a few small patches, while others may have large areas of affected skin. Dr Singh further explains, “plant-based diets help in calming hyper immune system and skin rashes  because they contain high antioxidants like gamma linolenic & alpha linolenic.”

Kim Kardashian was 25 when she was diagnosed with psoriasis. She once even shared a photo of her face flare-up, saying, "It got extremely bad—it covered my whole face and a majority of my entire body.” She further explained how turning to a plant-based diet has helped her get a handle on the skin condition.

The SKIMS founder shared that she didn’t start eating a plant-based diet specifically to help with her psoriasis. Instead, she became interested in this lifestyle after watching documentaries during the quarantine period. She explained that this change has made her more aware of how she treats her body. “It’s made me more mindful about how what I put in my body affects me, not just psoriasis but also my mood, my stress levels, my energy, everything,” she said.

Doctor Explains How A Plant-Based Diet Can Help In Curing Psoriasis

Dr Teena Singh shares that plant-based diets recently got high attention from celebrities and doctors around the globe. Dr Singh approves that plant-based treatment can help in curing psoriasis. “Yes, a well-balanced plant-based diet protects against chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, skin concerns and cardiovascular diseases. So I would give a thumbs up to a vegan diet,” she said.

She further explained,

  • Plant-based diet aka vegan diet can be beneficial for bacterial, hormonal and environmental damage and repairs various skin conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis.
  • Animal products such as milk, yoghurt, cheese and meat have a higher content of hormonal components and other bioactive molecules like steroids, A-lactalbumin, growth factor stimulating hormones and IGF-1.
  • Vegan diets play protective and ameliorative roles due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant reaction.
  • Plant-based diets help the immune system and skin rashes because they contain high antioxidants like gamma-linolenic and alpha-linolenic.
