Is Protein Powder Really Good for Weight Loss? Mona Singh Shares Her 15-Kilo Journey and Homemade Recipe

People are always looking for quick and effective ways to lose weight. From diets to workouts, many methods promise results. One popular idea is that protein powder can help shed those extra kilos. Recently, Mona Singh, who’s back on screen with Netflix’s ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’, shared how her homemade protein powder helped her lose 15 kilos. Curious if protein powder is really that effective? We spoke with nutritionist Rakshita Mehra to get the facts.

Mona Singh’s Homemade Protein Powder Recipe

Mona revealed her secret to weight loss during a podcast with comedian Bharti Singh. She described her homemade protein powder as a simple mix of dry-roasted nuts and seeds like fox nuts, cashews, walnuts, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, and chia seeds. She powders this mix and drinks it with coconut milk or water. Mona explained, “All I did was mix these ingredients and have it daily. It gave me energy, helped build muscles, and kept me full for longer.”

This natural protein blend helps in gradual weight loss and better muscle tone, she added. Unlike store-bought powders with fillers and artificial ingredients, Mona’s DIY mix is wholesome and affordable. It’s packed with plant-based protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins, and minerals all helping her feel healthier and more energised.

Rakshita Mehra, a nutritionist, explained, “Protein powder can aid weight loss, but it’s not magic. It works best when combined with a balanced diet and exercise. Protein helps reduce hunger by keeping you full longer. This can cut down unnecessary snacking and calories.”

She emphasised that homemade protein powders like Mona’s are better than many commercial ones. “Nuts and seeds are natural sources of protein and healthy fats. They release energy slowly and keep blood sugar stable, helping in weight management.” However, Rakshita warned, “If protein powder is used alone without overall diet control, it won’t produce significant weight loss.”

She also added, “People should remember, weight loss is about calorie balance and a healthy lifestyle. Protein helps build muscle, which boosts metabolism, supporting long-term fat loss.” So, protein powders can be valuable tools, but must be part of a thoughtful, sustainable plan.

What to Keep in Mind If You Use Protein Powder for Weight Loss1 - 2025-09-24T160431.413

  • Use it as a supplement, not a substitute. It should fill gaps, not replace whole meals.
  • Watch your total calorie intake; even “healthy” powders can add up.
  • Choose clean ingredients: minimal additives, artificial sweeteners, or fillers.
  • Consult a professional, especially if you have kidney problems, allergies, or metabolic conditions.

Protein powder, especially a clean, homemade version, can be a satisfying, nutritious part of the journey toward better health and shape.
