If you’re trying to manage your weight but want to avoid the jitters that come with high-caffeine drinks, then Hojicha, a Japanese green tea, roasted to perfection, might be your best bet. This tea offers more than just a comforting flavour; it could quietly support your metabolism, digestion and overall fitness goals.
But How Does Hojicha do that? “Hojicha gives you a sense of fullness and satiety once you consume it, and also is lighter on the gut, contrary to high caffeine beverages,” said Varnit Yadav, Exercise and Nutrition Coach, Institute of Nutrition and Fitness Sciences, India, and JPS Health & Fitness, Australia. Read on below to know how Hojicha helps.
Does Hojicha Make You Lose Weight?
Polyphenols and catechins found in Hojicha facilitate the process of fat breakdown and have anti-inflammatory effects. It also contains the amino acid L-theanine, a calming agent that does not cause drowsiness, due to its special roasting process. When combined, these compounds can contribute to improved metabolic balance, alleviating fat storage under the influence of stress, and to the fact that the body can convert carbohydrates more effectively.
According to Coach Varnit, “Drinking hojicha can be a good alternative for a sweetened high-calorie beverage. Think of it as a low-calorie replacement during weight loss. Hojicha comes with some antioxidant properties, which can contribute to your overall well-being (when consumed in moderation).”

Hojicha vs Matcha: Which is Better?
Although high levels of catechins and caffeine found in green tea and matcha can temporarily increase metabolism, they can make one feel restless or experience digestive issues in sensitive persons. “It is quite similar to green tea or matcha with a difference of having probably the lowest caffeine content amongst these, and comprises lowered catechins (an antioxidant),” said Coach Varnit.
However, Hojicha is soothing for the gut as it has less caffeine, making it the right choice to consume in the evening and make long-term usage without any overstimulation. It is not as harsh (in terms of fat burning) but facilitates a more relaxed weight-loss regimen.

It's lighter on the gut, so people who are sensitive to high caffeine beverages can go for this option.
