You must have seen a viral hack on social media, where people are sealing their lips with the help of tapes, to deal with certain health issues. They claim that by doing this at night, while sleeping, you can fix problems such as mouth breathing and snoring. This practice, known as mouth taping, is believed to provide benefits such as sharper jawlines, anti-ageing effects, and better sleep quality. While this trend may have been popularised by influencers, celebrities, and beauty brands, medical experts often warn that the practice lacks scientific validation and can be risky.
To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Pooja Pillai, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.
Is The Mouth Taping Trend Safe?
Let us straightaway address the main point: is the viral trend of mouth taping safe or not? Answering this, Dr Pillai says, “Mouth taping is a trend in which people place a small piece of tape over their lips while sleeping to encourage breathing through the nose. It has become popular online, but it is not a proven treatment for snoring, sleep problems or overall health.”
The expert further explains, “The main concern is safety. There is also a risk of skin irritation, anxiety, discomfort, or waking suddenly during the night. If your nose becomes blocked during sleep, forcing the mouth to remain closed can make breathing difficult.”
Dr Pillai continues, “This may be particularly risky for people with nasal congestion, allergies, a deviated nasal septum, enlarged tonsils or other conditions that obstruct the airway. Mouth taping can also be risky for people with obstructive sleep apnoea because it does not treat the underlying airway blockage.”

Tips To Practice Mouth Taping Safely
While this practice is risky, some people are still in favour of practicing it. Addressing this, Dr Pillai says that if someone is considering mouth taping, they should take precautions. On this note, the expert shares some safety tips to follow while practicing mouth taping at night:
- First identify and treat the reason for mouth breathing or snoring. A doctor may check for nasal obstruction or sleep apnoea when symptoms suggest these problems.
- Do not use ordinary household tape.
- Tightly seal the entire mouth.
- It is important to seek medical advice if there is loud regular snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, morning headaches or excessive daytime sleepiness, as these can be signs of sleep apnoea.
“Overall, mouth taping is not automatically safe because it is popular online. Its benefits remain uncertain, while risks can be significant for people with underlying breathing or airway problems. Treating the actual cause of mouth breathing is safer than blindly taping the mouth shut at night,” concludes the expert.

What Study Says About The Practice of Mouth Taping
A 2025 study, published in open-access scientific journal PLOS One, examined the popular social media trend of nighttime mouth taping. It attempted to understand whether it can actually cure sleep issues such as mouth breathing and sleep apnoea. The researchers analysed data from 10 different studies, involving a total of 213 patients, to understand the safety and effectiveness of mouth taping.
The findings discovered mixed results when it comes to real benefits. Only two studies showed significant improvements in sleep apnoea markers such as oxygen levels or the apnoea-hypopnea index. Several other studies depicted no noticeable difference in sleep quality or breathing improvements when participants taped their mouths shut while sleeping.
Moreover, researchers focused on serious potential risks linked with the trend, especially the danger of asphyxiation. This risk is particularly high for those who have nasal obstructions such as from a deviated septum or severe allergies, who might struggle to breathe at all if their mouths are taped. Many of the clinical studies specifically excluded those with nasal blockages to prevent life-threatening breathing complications.

Due to the lack of concrete evidence and the potential for severe harm, the study concluded that people should not indiscriminately practice mouth taping. While a few may have witnessed minor benefits, the risk of restricting your airway without medical supervision is way high. Anyone struggling with sleep apnoea or chronic mouth breathing should consult a doctor for safe, proven treatments, instead of following a viral internet hack. Lastly, more clinical research is required before mouth taping can be recommended as a safe or effective medical treatment to patients.

Conclusion
The viral trend of mouth taping has significant risks. For those with undiagnosed sleep apnoea, nasal congestion, or allergies, it can lead to dangerous breathing restrictions or asphyxiation. While some claim it improves sleep quality, there is no clinical evidence on this. Medical professionals strongly warn that you must not restrict your airway without professional guidance. Anyone struggling with chronic snoring or mouth breathing should consult a doctor to treat the root cause of the issues, instead of relying on unproven and potentially harmful internet remedies.
