Ginger honey lemon tea is probably one of the most popular and commonly ordered hot beverages during the winter, especially for those who are caffeine- and dairy-intolerant. A lot of people also start their mornings with a glass of warm honey water to reap its potential benefits. However, several claims suggest that adding honey to hot water may not be as effective as deemed, or worse, it may reduce its efficacy. This prompted us to speak with a dietician, and here's what the expert revealed.

Dr Srabani Mukherjee, Dietician, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, Kolkata, said, “Honey provides numerous health benefits owing to its natural properties, featuring antioxidants that combat inflammation and support overall well-being.”
She added, “Its antibacterial qualities make it a potential remedy for soothing sore throats and coughs, while the natural sugars offer a healthier energy source compared to refined sugars.”
Honey is also considered a valuable sugar substitute for patients with diabetes. A 2014 study published in the Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association explored the effect of different honey doses on blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients compared to regular glucose. Researchers found that the blood sugar rise peaked faster with honey and then dropped quickly, suggesting a lower and shorter-lived impact compared to glucose. Notably, some patients on the low honey dose even experienced a slight blood sugar decrease.
Is It Safe To Add Honey In Warm Water?
On being asked whether adding honey to warm water is safe, Dr Mukherjee responded positively, saying that it is generally safe and can create a comforting beverage. “Warm water can help honey dissolve more easily, making it a pleasant addition to beverages,” she added.
However, she advised against using boiling water, as excessive heat may degrade some of honey's beneficial properties. In fact, a study published in An Internationally Quarterly Journal of Research in Ayurveda AYU found that heating honey specifically at 140°C not only affected its taste and nutritional value, but also made it potentially harmful.

Temperature: Use warm, not boiling, water to preserve honey’s beneficial properties.
Dissolving: Even after adding honey to warm water, stir it well so that it gets dissolved properly.
Raw honey: Choose raw honey for maximum nutritional benefits.
