Importance of Sunscreen for Bald and Thinning Heads You Need To Know Today

Bald or thinning scalp? Here's why applying sunscreen to the exposed scalp skin should be your priority.

You put sunscreen on your face and come out. Maybe even on your arms. But what about your scalp? For men with bald or thinning hair, the scalp is directly exposed to harsh UV rays, almost every day. Yet it’s one of the most neglected areas in sun protection. Experts highlight that slight redness after a long drive, burning sensation at the top of your head, or unexpected tanning on the scalp are a few signs that your skin is asking for protection.

During a prior engagement with us regarding men’s skincare, Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant Dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, had pointed out that scalp care is just as essential as skincare for the face and neck.

“The scalp is skin, too and exposed skin needs sun protection. Bald and thinning areas are particularly more vulnerable to sun damage, pigmentation, and even long-term risks if sunscreen is not used,” she had shared.

Why the Bald Scalp Is More Vulnerable

Hair naturally acts as a shield against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, when hair starts thinning or receding, that protection reduces significantly. The head, particularly the top and the hairline are directly exposed to sunlight. Since the skin here is often not used to constant UV exposure, it can burn faster than other areas. According to studies, repeated sun exposure can lead to:

  • Sunburn
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Early change in the skin of the scalp
  • Dryness and flakiness
  • Increased long-term skin damage risk

Effects of UV Rays Beyond Sunburn

Although redness and peeling are immediate issues, prolonged exposure to the sun, without protection, may accelerate skin ageing. The scalp may experience uneven texture, dark spots and sensitivity over time.

According to Dr Passi, UV damage breaks down collagen in the skin, which can lead to premature ageing, and the scalp is no exception. Early protection helps in healthier skin and reduces preventable damage.

Who Should Be Extra Careful?

Here are a list of men who should be careful:

  • Receding hairlines
  • Thinning crowns
  • Completely shaved heads
  • Short buzz cuts

How to Protect Your Scalp

Protecting a bald or thinning head from the sun does not need to be complex. Here is what Dr Passi suggested in another interaction:

  • Use a lightweight sunscreen
  • Select a sunscreen with a non-greasy and matte texture which is not heavy or sticky on the head.
  • Apply generously
  • Apply again when outdoors for long periods
  • Wear a cap when possible
  • Spray or gel-based sunscreens can be convenient options for scalp application

Bottomline

Exposed scalp requires sunscreen - daily protection will avert sunburn, freckles and permanent damage.
