Rich In Antioxidants

The main ingredient of matcha latte is matcha powder, which is made from finely ground green tea leaves. According to Harvard TH Chan School Of Public Health, matcha contains antioxidants that help you protect against cellular damage and lower the risk of health conditions, such as heart disease and cancer.

Dr Singhwal said, “It is packed with antioxidants, notably catechins, which are renowned for their disease-fighting properties. These potent antioxidants help combat oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the body's immune system.”

Detoxifying Properties

Moreover, matcha is rich in chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for its vibrant green colour. “Chlorophyll boasts detoxifying properties, aiding in the elimination of toxins and heavy metals from the body. This cleansing effect contributes to improved digestion and enhanced overall vitality”, added Dr Singhwal.

Calm Alertness

Matcha is well known for its ability to promote a state of calm alertness, which is one of its most celebrated attributes. Unlike coffee, which can cause jitters and energy crashes, matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid that is known for its calming effects. L-theanine works in synergy with caffeine to provide sustained energy levels without the accompanying jitters, thereby fostering a sense of focused tranquillity.

Nutritional Powerhouse

Dr Singhwal said, “Furthermore, matcha is a nutritional powerhouse, boasting an array of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and calcium. These nutrients support optimal bodily function, promote healthy skin, and fortify bones and teeth.”

Here's a step-by-step guide to make this drink, as listed by the expert:

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of high-quality matcha powder
  • 1 cup of milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • Sweetener of choice (honey or maple syrup)
  • Hot water

Instructions

  1. Sift the matcha powder: To ensure a smooth and lump-free beverage, sift the matcha powder into a bowl using a fine-mesh sieve.
  2. Add hot water: Heat water and pour a small amount (about 1/4 cup) over the matcha powder.
  3. Whisk it well: Using a bamboo whisk or a small whisk, vigorously whisk the matcha and hot water until frothy and well combined. This step helps to dissolve the matcha powder and create a silky-smooth texture.
  4. Heat the milk: In a separate saucepan, heat the milk of your choice until steaming hot. Be careful not to boil the milk, as it can affect its taste and texture.
  5. Combine the matcha and milk: Pour the steaming milk into the matcha mixture, stirring gently to combine. Add your preferred sweetener to taste, adjusting the sweetness according to your preference.
  6. Serve and enjoy: Pour the matcha latte into a cosy mug, savouring its vibrant colour and inviting aroma. Garnish with matcha powder or frothed milk for an extra touch.
