Celery juice is a popular drink among health enthusiasts. It goes viral on social media every now and then, and is being termed as a miracle cure for liver detoxing and deep cleansing. To separate fact from fiction, we consulted an internal medicine who explains if this trendy green drink truly lives up to its promise. While celery is undeniably packed with important vitamins, whether it actually interacts with your body's built-in filtration system or not remains a point of debate.

Let us take a look at what Dr Pooja Pillai, Consultant Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore has to say about it.

Can Celery Juice Really Detox Your Liver?

Let us dive right in and address the main question – is celery juice actually an effective detox drink for your liver? Answering this, Dr Pillai says, “Celery juice has become popular as a ‘detox’ drink, but there is no strong scientific evidence that it can detox or cleanse the liver. This is because the liver already has a highly efficient natural system for removing waste and toxins from the body through enzymes and by working together with the kidneys and digestive system.”

Shedding light on the benefit of celery, Dr Pillai says that celery is a healthy vegetable that contains water, fibre (mostly when eaten whole rather than juiced), vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, folate, and antioxidants that can support overall health, improve hydration, and contribute to a balanced diet.

The expert adds, “However, drinking celery juice alone cannot reverse liver damage, remove toxins, cure fatty liver disease, or replace medical treatment for liver conditions. For people with a healthy liver, drinking fresh celery juice in moderation is generally safe and may be a refreshing way to increase vegetable intake, but it should not be viewed as a miracle health drink because juicing removes much of the beneficial fibre that helps digestion, blood sugar control, and gut health.”

Health Benefits of Celery Juice

According to the Cleveland Clinic, celery contains certain substances such as flavonoids. It helps reduce inflammation in your body and act as a shield, protecting your cells from damage caused by inflammation. It adds that celery is rich in vitamin C, which means it has antioxidant properties, helping your body stay strong and fight off harmful substances.

The Cleveland Clinic mentions some of the benefits of celery juice:

  • High nutritional value
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Helps reduce blood pressure
  • Hydrating properties

Who Should Avoid Celery Juice?

Now we know that celery juice has multiple health benefits. However, it is not suitable for everyone. Dr Pillai shares who should avoid this drink:

  • People with kidney disease.
  • Those taking blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin.
  • Individuals with celery allergies should speak with their doctor before drinking large amounts of celery juice regularly, as celery is high in vitamin K and also contains natural compounds that may interact with certain medical conditions or medications.

Tips To Keep Your Liver Healthy

Dr Pillai says that the best way to keep your liver healthy is not through detox drinks but by following healthy daily habits such as:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Limiting alcohol.
  • Avoiding smoking.
  • Staying well hydrated.
  • Getting vaccinated against hepatitis when recommended.
  • Managing conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol.

“If you have symptoms such as persistent fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, swelling, severe abdominal pain, or abnormal liver test results, consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation instead of relying on detox products or social media health trends,” concludes Dr Pillai.

Conclusion

To summarise, fresh celery juice is a healthy and hydrating drink. However, it is not a magical detox cure that can flush out toxins or cure liver disease. Our liver is a highly efficient, natural detoxifier, and the most effective way to support it is by following a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sustainable lifestyle choices. If someone is concerned about their liver health, then they should skip the fad diets and consult a doctor for proper, science-backed medical guidance.
