But underneath that badge of busyness, studies suggest multitasking, particularly frequent task-switching and media multitasking, may have several mental tolls.

Such switch costs represent the executive control processes the brain must execute to bring an end to one set of rules and begin another.

Another study of media multitasking (individuals who regularly use multiple channels of media simultaneously) concluded that heavy media multitaskers were more distractible and did poorly on tests of working memory and attention compared to light media multitaskers. Briefly frequent multitasking, particularly with media, is associated with lower filtering of irrelevant stimuli and poorer task performance on laboratory tests.

There is no conclusive evidence that healthy adult multitasking causes structural brain damage. The majority of lab and imaging studies record functional distinctions (how the brain operates while executing tasks), not permanent injury. On the other hand, chronic distraction habits and fractured attention can create persistent habits, such as limited ability for sustained attention, that compromise deep work and learning with the passage of time. Reviews stress that additional longitudinal, cause-and-effect research is necessary before proclaiming long-term neurocognitive damage.

"Chronic fragmentation of attention, habitual multitasking, as we call it, usually looks clinically like heightened mental weariness, sleep disruption, and trouble finishing tasks. Although this doesn't rip the brain apart, it compromises the habits and routines of being able to concentrate deeply, and that can impact work, study and mood,” explained Shrey Kumar Srivastav, Senior Consultant and General Physician, Sharda Hospital - Noida.

"My actionable tip is straightforward: decrease the number of context switches per hour. Apply dedicated time blocks, minimise notifications, and use your phone as a tool, not as a persistent request. Minor structural adjustments bring great rewards in attention and minimise cognitive fatigue,” he recommended.

Multitasking in the ordinary sense does not create sensational brain damage, but it does exact real costs: more time, more mistakes, higher cognitive weariness, and detectable declines in working memory and attention on most tests. The balance of evidence favours straightforward, easy-to-implement measures like monotasking, minimising interruptions, batch processing like tasks, and safeguarding sleep, to maintain cognitive capability and restore deeper, less stressful productivity.
