When you are on your weight loss journey, it is important to focus on the right diet. This also includes the type of drink you are consuming. Many people like to start their day with black coffee – devoid of milk and sugar, thinking it will help them lose weight. While others prefer black tea for the same reason. But if compared between the two – black coffee and black tea – which is better for weight loss? Let’s find out.

To get an expert view on this, we reached out to Ms Edwina Raj, Head of Services - Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Can Black Coffee Help In Weight Loss?

Black tea and black coffee are both low-calorie drinks and can support weight loss when taken without sugar, cream, or milk. On this note, our expert explains whether black coffee helps in weight loss or not.

“Black coffee contains more caffeine than black tea. Caffeine can increase metabolism slightly and help the body burn more calories for a short time. Because of this higher caffeine content, black coffee may give a stronger boost in energy and appetite control, which can help some people eat less during the day,” explains Ms Raj.

As per a 2021 review of studies, coffee can prevent and reduce fat stores in the body by different factor like:

  • Its action on the gastrointestinal microbiota, which can impact obesity.
  • It can influence proteins which are involved in the production of lipids in cells.
  • It can cause inhibition of adipocytes, which are cells in your body that store fat.

Can Black Tea Help In Weight Loss?

Now let us understand whether black tea too can aid weight loss. Our expert explains.

“Black tea, made from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, contains antioxidants called polyphenols that may support fat metabolism and gut health. It has less caffeine compared to coffee, so it gives a milder and more steady energy effect without causing strong jitters in most people. Some people find that black tea is easier on the stomach and does not cause acidity as often as coffee,” answers Ms Raj.

Black Coffee Vs Black Tea – Which Is Better?

Now it’s time for the verdict – is black coffee or black tea better for weight loss? “For weight loss, both drinks can help only if combined with healthy eating and regular exercise, and neither drink alone will cause major fat loss,” answers Ms Raj.

“Black coffee, which is brewed from roasted beans of the Coffea arabica, may suppress appetite more strongly because of its caffeine level, but in some people, it can also increase anxiety, heartburn, or sleep disturbance,” adds the expert. She adds, “Drinking too much coffee can disturb sleep, and poor sleep can slow down weight loss. Drinking too much tea may also cause mild stomach discomfort in sensitive people.”

“In simple terms, black coffee may give a slightly stronger short-term boost for burning calories, while black tea may be gentler and better for long-term daily use,” concludes Ms Raj.
