5 Ancient Ayurvedic Rituals Making a Comeback in Wellness Trends

Once fading over time, Ayurveda is making a strong comeback in the health and wellness landscape. The ancient Indian system of medicine is gaining popularity not only in India but across the world due to its natural and holistic approach to healing, which emphasises preventive and personalised solutions. Focused on creating a balance between the mind, body, and spirit– the three cornerstones of optimal health, Ayurveda suggests making changes in daily routine to prevent serious ailments.

5 Ayurvedic Rituals That You Must Practise Regularly

While there are many Ayurvedic rituals with their specific health benefits, here are 5 of the most popular ones that are being widely embraced, as shared by Ayurveda specialist Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Dr Basu Eye Care Centre.

Gandusha (Oil pulling)

Gandusha or oil pulling technique, involves taking some quantity of oil (sesame, coconut, or others, depending on dosha) in the mouth and swishing it for a few minutes to pull toxins and microorganisms before spitting out. A PMC study shows that starting your day with this detoxifying process prevents oral diseases, strengthens gums, and promotes better health.

Nasya (Nasal Oil Therapy)

Nasya is the practise of applying medicated oil or ghee inside the nostrils. Administered on an empty stomach an hour before or after a shower or exercise, Naysa is quite effective for neck and head ailments. The therapy also nourishes the eyes, addressing issues like dryness, strain, and blurred vision. A study has also found that intranasal sesame oil instillation is beneficial for respiratory health.

Herbal Elixirs (Medicinal Spices)

As per Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, “Ayurvedic herbs like Triphala, Giloy, Ashwagandha, and Amla are finding a place on the kitchen shelf for their significant role in supporting overall health and well-being. Like Triphala decoction is used for nurturing the eyes and strengthening the vision or Amla for luscious hair and clear skin.”

Tongue scraping (Jihwa Prakshalana)

Another excellent remedy to remove ama or toxins from the body is Jihwa Prakshalana.

“It is the process of scraping the tongue early in the morning, using a copper or stainless-steel tongue scraper, to remove the white coating. The morning ritual aids digestion, activates taste buds and improves oral hygiene,” explains Dr Mandeep Singh Basu.

Abhyanga (Self-Massage)

Abhyanga or self-massage is a deeply nourishing and stress-relieving process. This self-care routine involves gently massaging the skin after dry brushing with warm oil. This helps nourish the skin, calm the nervous system, and improve sleep, thereby supporting overall health and wellness, as published in the Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports.

Making these simple Ayurvedic rituals a part of your daily routine can improve your overall health and well-being. They are absolutely safe for everyone and do not have any side effects. Ayurveda has solutions for almost everything. You just need to do thorough research and consult an Ayurveda expert for the right guidance.
