Revealed! Skincare Trends For 2024 By Dr Blossom Kochhar

New year, new resolutions, and new trends! It’s what everyone is currently talking about. While many are looking to up their fitness game, skincare enthusiasts need to buckle up as 2024 brings them exciting new trends that promise to revolutionise skincare. In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, wellness and beauty expert Dr Blossom Kochhar, Chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies, shared some of the top trends that will be witnessed in the new year. But mind you! Trends can evolve. What might be popular and trendy in the first quarter of the year may not be on the lips towards the end of the year, Dr Kochhar said.

Personalised Skin Care Regimen

Before starting any skincare routine, it is integral to understand your skin and know what works best for it. According to Dr Kochhar, it is only going to get ultra-personalised in 2024, which means it will go beyond simply addressing basic skin types and concerns and will involve understanding a person's unique skincare needs to tailor the perfect regimen.

“Gone are the days of generic skin care," said the doctor.

Sustainable And Eco-friendly Products

Not exactly a trend, but sustainable skincare is a conscious choice that is likely to take over in 2024, according to Dr Kochhar. She said, "Consumers are increasingly becoming conscious of the environmental impact of beauty products. Skincare brands may focus on sustainable packaging, cruelty-free practices, and eco-friendly ingredients."

In addition, the clean beauty movement, which emphasises products free from certain harmful ingredients, is expected to continue, the expert added, sharing that consumers may seek transparency in ingredient lists and opt for minimalistic formulations.

Wellness-Infused Skincare

Skincare should not just be about cleaning, moisturising, or nourishing your skin. Rather, it should involve treating your skin as an extension of your overall well-being. This connection between skincare and overall wellness is likely to strengthen this year, said Dr Kochhar, adding that products containing adaptogens, CBD, and other wellness-focused ingredients may gain popularity for their potential benefits. Research has shown that such natural compounds have the tendency to improve mood, balance hormones, combat fatigue, and boost the immune system.

Gut-Health And Skin Connection

Not many are aware that a healthy gut is the secret to overall well-being, including your skin health. Several studies have explored the fascinating link between our skin and gut microbes and how their imbalance can trigger various skin conditions, from eczema and psoriasis to acne and even cancer. A study published in the Journal Microorganisms found that different skin conditions seem to have specific microbial imbalances associated with them, both in the skin itself and in the gut. Additionally, researchers found that the imbalance in skin and gut microbes disrupts the immune system's function in the skin, leading to inflammation and promoting the development of skin conditions.

It seems that in 2024, people will be more aware of this link between gut health and skin conditions, and probiotics and prebiotics in skin care products could be explored for their potential to promote a healthy skin microbiome, said Dr Kochhar.

Conclusion

Following a good skincare regimen is of utmost importance, but making conscious choices and understanding the role of other vital organs in determining your skin health is equally crucial. While it is not necessary to follow all new trends, it is always advisable to adopt the ones that really work for you.
