Over the last few months, a new skincare regimen has been trending on social media. The suggestions claim that oiling the navel is the way to radiant skin. Based on centuries-old Ayurvedic rituals, this practice has recently gained popularity among beauty experts and wellness enthusiasts. Yet, how factual is this trend and can putting oil on the navel really glow up skin?
We reached out to our expert, Dr Kriti Lohia, CEO & Consultant Dermatologist at Aesthetics Redefined by Cocoona Clinic – Gurgaon, and she explained to us the reality of this ancient beauty practice.
Logic Behind Belly Button Oiling
The navel, or nabhi, is both culturally and therapeutically important in Ayurveda. It is thought to be the focal point for energy in the body and is associated with many veins and nerves. The therapy, known as Pechoti therapy, is said to allow for the nutrition to soak in through these vessels by applying oil to the navel, which affects overall health, including the skin.

"Historically, oils such as mustard, coconut, almond, or ghee have been applied on the belly button to balance doshas and support inner nourishment. Although the idea is intriguing, one has to draw a line between holistic wellness heritage and scientifically established dermatological advantages,” said Dr Lohia.
Is It Possible That Oiling Naval Enhance Skin Glow?
Dr Lohia explained that although the belly button is attached to the umbilical cord during gestation, the attachment does not continue to be functional after birth. "The perception that oil applied on the navel gets absorbed into the bloodstream and affects the glow of skin is not supported by medical evidence," she explained.
But she does include that indirect advantages can be present. "Massaging the region with healing oils will help to calm, enhance blood flow around the abdomen, and aid gut health, all of which will have indirect positive effects on the skin. Reducing stress and better digestion tend to show up as healthier, brighter skin.”
Simply put, rubbing oil on the belly button will not have an immediate brightening effect on the complexion, but it might help facilitate the type of inner balance that brings about radiant-looking skin in the long run.

Best Oils To Use To Oil Naval
If one cares to give this ritual a shot, the right oil is important to use. Dr Lohia recommended:
- Almond oil: full of Vitamin E and antioxidants, it aids in moisturising dry skin.
- Coconut oil: for antibacterial and moisturising properties.
- Mustard oil: also used in Ayurveda for heat and circulation.
- Neem oil: provides anti-inflammatory benefits for those with acne tendencies.
"It's important to use clean, cold-pressed oils and keep the navel area clean prior to application. "Only a few drops are necessary, gently massage for a few minutes, ideally at bedtime,” she said.
Possible Risks and Precautions of Oiling Naval
Though the trick appears harmless, Dr Lohia warned not to take it as a miracle skincare tip. "Individuals with skin allergies, eczema, or infections around the belly button must avoid putting oil directly on the area. Poor hygiene or impure oil use may lead to irritation, folliculitis, or clogged pores," she advised.
Bottomline
Putting oil on belly button might not have a direct scientific correlation to glowing skin, but it can be a calming, self-nurturing practice that leads to general health. As Dr Lohia summarised, "Think of it as a holistic ritual, a moment of calm that may help you connect with your body and mind. The real glow always comes from within."
