Ayurvedic Herbs That Help Promote Hair Growth And Reduce Hair Fall

With winter upon us, our hair and scalp are likely to experience dryness and damage. This is primarily because of the lack of humidity and moisture in the air, leading to a dry scalp and increased dandruff, which in turn contributes to hair fall.

To protect their locks, many spend a big chunk of their income on expensive hair products. But a better alternative could be Ayurveda, which, according to Dr Kriti Soni, Head of R&D, Kapiva, Delhi, and Bengaluru, is an age-old remedy to address contemporary hair concerns. Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, she said, “Stress, pollution, and hormonal changes can disrupt the delicate balance of our hair ecosystem,” which she believes can be revitalised by the ancient practice. Having said that, here are some Ayurvedic herbs that can help, as recommended by the expert.

Bhringraj Or Kesharaj

Often referred to as the 'ruler of the hair,' bhringraj, or kesharaj, is an Ayurvedic herb popular for its hair benefits. Dr Soni noted that it is rich in vitamin E, proteins, and antioxidants, which not only reduce damage, prevent infections, and boost blood circulation but also foster hair growth. An animal study published in the Archives of Dermatological Research found that applying bhringraj oil to rats increased the number of hair follicles and prevented hair loss.

Tulsi

According to Dr Soni, tulsi improves blood circulation in the scalp, which combats hair thinning, hair fall, and hair loss. In a 2011 study published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research, researchers found that patients with alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, benefitted from using Oscimum sanctum or tulsi in aromatherapy. However, more research is needed to determine the effectiveness of the herb.

Amla

“Amla, with vitamin C, iron, and carotene, maintains a healthy scalp, preventing breakage and strengthening follicles,” said Dr Soni. Also known as the Indian gooseberry, it also contains anti-fungal properties that help prevent and treat dandruff issues that can lead to itching and hair fall. Moreover, due to its richness in antioxidants, the Ayurvedic herb can also prevent premature greying of the hair.

Red Onion

If you're someone who wants their hair to grow longer and healthier, applying red onion oil or serum could prove beneficial. In general, onions are rich in dietary sulphur, which is essential for hair growth. It is present in amino acids and helps in the production of a hair protein compound called keratin, which is said to promote "hair follicle formation and subsequent hair growth," in an animal study published in the journal Communication Biology.

Hibiscus

Dr Soni referred to hibiscus as a natural conditioner that stimulates keratin production for healthy hair growth. This is because the herb contains amino acids that can improve blood circulation in the scalp.

Ayurvedic Practice For Hair Health

Besides making use of Ayurvedic herbs, there are certain practices that can promote healthy hair health.

“One of the Ayurvedic practices for healthy and nourished hair is abhyanga, an ayurvedic head massage that enhances blood circulation, promotes overall hair well-being, nourishes hair, and relaxes the mind through warm herbal oils and gentle strokes,” said Dr Soni, adding that it promotes both physical and mental well-being and harmonises the body and spirit for holistic hair care.

In addition, maintaining proper hair hygiene is crucial. Ensure that you use mild shampoos and limit your hairstyling to a few products. Ayurveda also recommends washing hair with cold or lukewarm water.
