This can take a toll on your overall health as the kidneys play a vital role in eliminating waste and maintaining fluid balance”, highlighted Dr Puneet. Dr Puneet listed seasonal practices that you should follow for promoting kidney health as follows:

Spring is a season of renewal and rejuvenation. To support kidney health during this time, ayurveda recommends incorporating detoxifying herbs and foods. “Triphala, a blend of three fruits, serves as an excellent detoxifier, promoting healthy digestion and elimination of toxins. Also, hydrating foods like melons and cucumbers help maintain fluid balance”, added Dr Puneet.

Summer

As temperatures rise, it is essential to stay cool and hydrated. “It is suggested that you increase the intake of fluids like coconut water and aloe vera juice. Cooling herbs, such as coriander and mint can be included in meals”, informed Dr Puneet. In addition, practising Pranayama, a set of breathing exercises, helps balance Pitta dosha and supports kidney health.

Monsoon

Monsoon brings increased humidity, which potentially impacts your digestion. Therefore, it is best to feed on light and easily digestible foods during this season. Herbal teas with ginger and tulsi (holy basil) help support the digestive system. Adequate water intake is necessary, but remember moderation is key. Therefore, do not overdo the consumption of fluids.

Autumn

Autumn is a transitional period, and ayurveda encourages incorporating warming spices like cinnamon and cardamom into the diet. Nourishing foods, such as ghee (clarified butter) in moderation can support kidney health. Regular physical activity, such as gentle yoga, aids in maintaining overall well-being.

Winter calls for grounding practices to balance Vata dosha. “Warm, nourishing soups and stews with kidney-friendly vegetables like sweet potatoes and beets are recommended”, said Dr Puneet. Herbal teas infused with ginger and turmeric provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Abhyanga, or self-massage with warm oil, helps nourish the body and calm the nervous system.
