“Ayurveda, with its roots in ancient Indian philosophy, emphasizes the balance of three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—to achieve optimal health. The doshas represent different combinations of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space) and govern various physiological and psychological functions in the body,” said Dr Chaudhary.
Explaining how bananas and milk together disbalance the doshas, Dr Chaudhary listed:
- Digestive Incompatibility: While bananas are relatively heavy and cooling, milk is considered heavy and heating. Combining these opposing qualities can create an imbalance in the digestive process, potentially leading to digestive issues.
- Imbalance of Doshas: The combination of banana and milk can disturb the balance of doshas, particularly aggravating Pitta dosha. This imbalance can manifest as indigestion, bloating, or other discomforts.
- Potential Toxins Formation: Ayurveda suggests that combining bananas and milk may create Ama, a concept referring to toxins or undigested food material. Ama is considered a precursor to various health issues, and Ayurveda aims to prevent its formation.
- Nutrient Absorption Concerns: The conflicting qualities of bananas and milk may hinder the optimal absorption of nutrients from both foods. This interference may compromise the assimilation of essential vitamins and minerals.

“While Ayurveda discourages the simultaneous consumption of bananas and milk, it does offer alternatives for those who enjoy both foods,” said Dr Chaudhary. He listed:
- Separate Consumption: Ayurveda suggests consuming bananas and milk at different times of the day to avoid the potential clash in digestive qualities. Maintaining a gap between these two foods allows the body to process them more efficiently.
- Alternative Combinations: Ayurveda proposes alternative ways to enjoy banana and milk separately. For example, incorporating spices like cardamom or nutmeg in a banana milkshake may help balance the digestive effects.
- Consider Individual Constitution: Ayurveda recognises that the individual constitution, known as Prakriti, plays a significant role in determining dietary recommendations. Factors such as age, digestive strength, and overall health should be considered when making dietary choices.
“While Ayurveda provides valuable insights into food combinations, it's essential to recognise that individual responses to food can vary. Modern nutritional perspectives acknowledge the nutritional benefits of both banana and milk. Many people enjoy the combination without experiencing digestive issues,” said Dr Chaudhary.
