Healthy Snack or Sugar Trap? Dietitian Breaks Down Flavoured Yoghurt

Flavoured yoghurt can be a convenient source of protein, calcium and beneficial live cultures. But are they as nutritious as plain yoghurts? Read to know the answer.

Flavoured yoghurts are a popular post-meal snack, which is often preferred by health conscious individuals. They have the goodness of yoghurt, coupled with the creamy texture and taste of a dessert. But one question that is often asked is: are flavoured yoghurts actually healthy or not? To understand this, we interacted with a top dietitian, who explains how healthy they are, their sugar content, and whether plain yoghurt is a better choice.

Let us take a look at what Ms Chitra BK, Chief of Dietetics, KIMS Hospitals, Electronic City, Bengaluru, has to say about it.

Are Flavoured Yoghurts Healthy?

Let us straightaway get to the point: are flavoured yoghurts actually healthy or are they just sugary treats? Answering this, Ms Chitra says, “Flavoured yoghurt can be a convenient source of protein, calcium and beneficial live cultures. But it is important to remember that not all flavoured yoghurts are nutritionally equal. The main issue is the amount of sugar in yoghurt, which can raise the number of calories and carbs compared to regular yoghurt.”

The expert further explains, “As a dietitian, I would recommend that people should check the label on the item rather than take the claims on it to be true. Specifically, check out the amount of added sugar, the amount of total sugar, the protein content and serving size. We should remember that some sugar in plain yoghurt is lactose, which naturally occurs in it.”

Are There Any Risks of Eating Flavoured Yoghurts Daily?

Ms Chitra says that frequent intake of flavoured yoghurt that is high in sugar may lead to surplus added sugar in one’s diet. She adds, “This may be a major issue for weight watchers and those trying to regulate blood sugar levels. That being said, eating flavoured yoghurt from time to time is not unhealthy in itself.”

So is there a better alternative? Shedding light on this, the expert says, “A better option would be plain Greek yoghurt or an unsweetened version of it mixed with seasonal fruit, nuts, or seeds. This mixture is packed with protein, fibre, good fats, and is naturally sweet. If you strive for flavoured yoghurt, make sure it is as little processed as possible, has low sugar content, and contains only a few ingredients.”

Are Flavoured Yoghurts Rich in Sugar?

A 2019 study, published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition, examined the sugar content of flavoured milks and yoghurts. The researchers discovered that flavoured dairy products contained nearly twice the average total sugar compared to their unflavoured counterparts. As per the study, the average total sugar content was 9.1 g/100 mL for flavoured milks and 11.5 g/100 g for flavoured yoghurts. Moreover, free sugars (the sugars which are added during processing rather than naturally occurring lactose) accounted for approximately 41% and 42% of the total sugar in these milks and yoghurts, respectively.

The research ultimately concluded that flavoured yoghurts and milks are indeed rich in added sugars and contribute significantly to increased sugar intake. Therefore, consumers looking for healthier dairy options should be careful of these hidden sweet additions.

Flavoured Yoghurt vs Plain Yoghurt: Which is Better?

People often wonder which one is healthier: flavoured or plain yoghurt? A 2025 study, published in the Asian Journal of Dairy and Food Research, compared the nutritional, microbial, and sensory qualities of plain and flavoured Greek yoghurts to understand which one is better. The researchers discovered that plain yoghurt is the clear winner when it comes to health benefits. This is because it contains the highest protein content among all the samples tested.

The study notes that plain yoghurt has significantly fewer calories and carbohydrates. This is because it lacks the added fruit purees and sugary sweeteners, all of which are found in flavoured versions. On the other hand, flavoured yoghurts have much less moisture, which gives them a thicker and creamier texture that many consumers enjoy. These flavoured options also have higher levels of acidity and total solids, which makes them taste better overall.

The research discovered that strawberry-flavoured yoghurt was voted the absolute favorite among the peers due to its superior sweetness and overall deliciousness. Moreover, the added fruit acids in flavoured yoghurts gave them an upper hand in keeping total microbial counts lower. However, this improved taste and texture in flavoured yoghurts comes at the direct cost of higher calorie and carbohydrate levels.

To conclude, deciding which yoghurt is ‘better’ depends completely on what you are looking for. If you want maximum protein and lower calories for a healthy diet, choose plain yoghurt. However, if taste and a dessert-like creaminess are your priority, flavoured yoghurt should be your choice.

Conclusion

Flavoured yoghurts offer a tasty and creamy treat. But their high sugar content often overshadows its natural nutritional benefits. Dietitians and research agree that plain, unsweetened yoghurt, especially Greek yoghurt, is the superior choice for maximising protein intake and keeping calories in check. For the best of both worlds, you can simply sweeten your plain yoghurt at home with fresh fruits, nuts, or seeds to enjoy a delicious, nutrient-packed snack without consuming excess sugar.
