The recent and tragic demise of TV actor and screenwriter 'Nitesh Pandey' as a result of cardiac arrest has brought to light the urgent need for awareness and education about this life-threatening condition, specifically among young adults. Not only Nitesh Pandey, but the Bollywood film and television industry has mourned the loss of many such talents, including actor Siddharth Shukla, singer KK, director and producer Raj Kaushal (Mandira Bedi's spouse), comedian Raju Srivastava, and more. All these precious lives were lost due to chronic heart attacks in the past few years.

Cardiac arrest is a serious medical emergency that can affect anyone, regardless of age or status. By shedding light on this topic, we aim to promote understanding, preventative measures, and early intervention to protect the well-being of individuals in our community.

In a recent interview conducted during a free health check-up camp with esteemed cardiologist Dr Vanita Arora (Apollo Hospitals) by team Agatsa Software Private Limited, we acquired valuable knowledge about maintaining optimal heart health. With heart disease being a leading cause of mortality worldwide, understanding preventive measures and adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle is crucial. In this piece, we will delve into the essential aspects covered in the interview to promote awareness around cardiac arrest.

Why is cardiac arrest affecting so many young adults?

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating effectively, resulting in a loss of blood flow to vital organs. It is crucial to differentiate cardiac arrest from a heart attack, as they are distinct conditions. A heart attack is caused by a blockage in the arteries supplying blood to the heart, whereas cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction that disrupts the heart's rhythm. It is caused when the heart stops pumping blood.

Why is cardiac arrest affecting so many young adults

According to Dr Vanita Arora “Previously, individuals in the age range of 50-55 were commonly afflicted with heart disease and cardiac arrests. However, the situation has undergone a transformation with regards to the age group experiencing these conditions. Presently, there is a notable increase in the occurrence of severe heart attacks, extensive coronary artery diseases, and larger-scale heart attacks. The functioning of the heart has been observed to decrease to 25-30%. This transformation can be attributed to various factors, both modifiable and non-modifiable.”

Non-Modifiable Reasons like Gender where Men are more prone than females, Age and Family History. While some are modifiable reasons like obesity, Diabetes, Alcohol consumption, smoking. And stress. Stress is such a big contributor to Heart health that anything an individual does in order to keep heart health healthy will not workout unless stress is controlled.

Understanding what causes Cardiac Arrest

The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease and is often caused by high cholesterol.

Dr. Vanita quotes “Preventive check-up is very important. Earlier even if a doctor recommended cardiac check-up done post 40 years of age still people ignored and did not go for any cardiac assessment done. Now the same cardiac tests are recommended to younger public entering in 30s or presented with the risk factors, the individuals must opt for preventive health check-ups to stay safe.

How to check for Cardiac Arrest

How to check for Cardiac Arrest?

While cardiac arrest is often associated with older individuals, it can tragically affect young adults as well. The sudden loss of a vibrant young life, as demonstrated by the untimely passing of Actors like Nitesh Pandey, Siddharth Shukla and many more serves as a stark reminder that this condition knows no boundaries. However, on symptoms like fluttering in the chest, chest pain, fainting or dizziness, one can check for arrhythmias or irregular heartbeat.

ECG is the most effective method to diagnose an arrhythmia. Considering the increased rise in heart patients, a pocket ECG machine comes handy. It can help in monitoring heart health anytime, anywhere. Dr Vanita recommends SanketLife Pro Plus as the Artificial Intelligence that helps the individual at risk factor or already suffering from heart diseases and effective measure to monitor ECG. In case any individual is having symptoms of palpitation, chest pain, shortness of breath he/she must get the ECG done using a pocket device and the reports can be sent to the doctor.
