Vegan Diet and COVID-19: Are Vegans Immune To Coronavirus Attack?

Is veganism the road to safety from coronavirus? Are vegans safe from coronavirus? Can eating vegan food prevent COVID-19 contraction? These are some questions raised lately after it was found that vegan people have a stronger immunity as compared to vegetarians let alone meat-eaters. Upon knowing the origin of this outbreak(Wuhan’s meat market), people stopped the consumption of meat to not risk their health. But after it was found that animals and their meat have nothing to do with this virus, the meat consumption started gradually. Even though it doesn’t carry the virus, meat does affect the immunity, says research. To know whether veganism actually helps in Coronavirus prevention, you need to read this article.

Can a vegan diet really prevent coronavirus?

Fruits and vegetables are good for health as they contain vital nutrients that boost immunity and fix our health. People who are consuming a lot of fruits and veggies these days are found to have better immunity as compared to others. Besides, vegetarians and non-vegetarians both are seen to be affected by this virus. Let us tell you, there is a fine line between vegetarian and vegan diet. Vegans are those who do not eat any kind of animal byproduct be it milk or eggs. This natural diet has innumerable benefits including weight loss, cholesterol control, heart health and stronger immune system.

But is this diet really helpful in preventing the COVID-19 virus?

Dr. K Srinath Reddy, President of the Public Health Foundation of India and a prominent health expert says that there is no proof of this theory yet. According to him, even vegetarians are victimized by this virus which is caused by infected droplets entering the body of a healthy man.

Although, people following veganism these days with eating only fruits and vegetables in their diet are highly likely to have naturally stronger immunity. This helps in fighting the virus and other infections. In an interview given to PTI, Doctor Reddy who is the former head of Department of Cardiology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) added that, at this time, it is best to include a lot of organic fruits and vegetables to your diet to strengthen our body’s defense system against the deadly coronavirus.

Other Protective Measures

Along with a healthy diet, Dr. Reddy also emphasizes facial protection. Not just mouth and nose but also eyes as this virus can also enter your body through the eyes. This is uncommon but chances are there. We must sanitize our hands often. You can make a hand sanitizer at home also. In the interview given to PTI, he said: "What happens is that this virus mainly enters through the face which means the nose, mouth or eyes. We don't usually talk about the eyes. When the droplets drop on the face, it can also enter (the body) through the eye because eyes are also connected to the nose. The virus can enter the eyes and then also go to the nose.”

It is better to wear spectacles along with a mask if you are going to be out for a longer period. Many people are seen covering their entire face with a plastic sheet to avoid contraction which is also a great idea. Just focus on fruits & vegetable diet and take precautions to stay safe.
