Whooping cough: 7 Tests For Children Before It Gets Serious

Parents want to protect their little ones from - whooping cough, also known as pertussis. This highly contagious respiratory infection can be pretty scary, especially for children.

But, early detection is key to keeping little child safe and sound. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), in 2018, there were about 1.5 lakh cases of pertussis observed worldwide. Here are seven essential tests to consider for your kids before a whooping cough gets serious.

Nasal Swab Test

“When your child starts showing symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, and a mild cough, don't ignore it! Get them tested with a nasal swab. This simple test can detect the presence of the pertussis bacterium and kickstart appropriate treatment if needed”, Dr Rajiv Chaudhary, MBBS, MD, VMMC, New Delhi.

Blood Test

A blood test can be helpful in diagnosing whooping cough, especially during the later stages of the infection. It checks for specific antibodies produced by the body to fight off the pertussis bacteria.

Chest X-ray

Sometimes, whooping cough can lead to complications like pneumonia. A chest X-ray can help identify any lung-related issues, ensuring that your child gets the necessary medical attention to prevent further complications.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Test

“The PCR is a molecular technique that can detect the genetic material of the pertussis bacteria with great accuracy. It's a reliable method to confirm a diagnosis, especially during the early stages of infection”, stated Dr Chaudhary.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

A complete blood count provides valuable insights into your child's overall health. It helps assess the level of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in the body's immune response to infections like whooping cough.

Sputum Culture Test

If your child has a severe cough with mucus, a sputum culture test may be recommended. It involves analysing a sample of the mucus to determine the presence of the pertussis bacteria.

Medical History Review

Sometimes, knowing your child's medical history can be important in making a diagnosis. Be sure to inform the doctor of any recent exposure to whooping cough or other relevant health details.

Remember, early detection and prompt treatment can make all the difference in how your child experiences whooping cough. If you suspect that your little one might have been exposed to the infection or if they're displaying symptoms like severe coughing fits or a "whoop" sound during breathing, don't delay – consult a healthcare professional right away.
