Haemorrhoids To Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Expert Explains The Reasons For Rectal Pain

Experiencing discomfort in the rectal area can be distressing and concerning. While it's essential to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis, understanding some common reasons behind rectal pain can provide helpful insights.

Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed blood vessels in the rectal area. As per Dr Pradeep Joshi, MBBS, MS, MCh, Senior Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist, Regency Superspeciality Hospital, they can cause itching, pain, and discomfort, especially during bowel movements. Incorporating high-fibre foods, avoiding prolonged sitting, and practising good bathroom habits can aid in managing haemorrhoids.

Large, thrombosed external haemorrhoids, as per the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), can cause pain when walking, sitting, or having a bowel movement.

Constipation

One of the most common reasons for rectal pain is constipation. When stool becomes hard and difficult to pass, it can put pressure on the rectal area, leading to pain or discomfort. Staying hydrated, eating a fibre-rich diet, and regular physical activity can help prevent and alleviate constipation.

Anal Fissures

Anal fissures are small tears or cuts in the lining of the anus, often caused by straining during bowel movements or passing hard stools.

The pain can be sharp and intense, but most fissures heal on their own with proper care and increased fibre intake.

Anal Abscesses

An anal abscess is a painful collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection in the anal glands.

According to Dr Umesh Khera, General Physician, Ivory Hospital, Greater Noida, this is more of an injury than an illness. Anal fissures expose the anus lining to muscle tissues, causing considerable pain during bowel movements. You may also have pain while sitting or lying on a surface

Proctitis

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Proctitis is the inflammation of the lining of the rectum and can lead to rectal pain, bleeding, and a feeling of urgency to pass stool.

Sexually transmitted infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or radiation therapy can cause proctitis.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Centre for Disease Control and Prevention states that conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis fall under IBD, causing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Along with abdominal pain, rectal discomfort, and bleeding are common symptoms.

Managing IBD often requires a personalised treatment plan with the help of a gastroenterologist.

Rectal pain can have various underlying causes, ranging from minor issues like constipation and haemorrhoids to more serious conditions like anal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. If you're experiencing rectal discomfort, don't hesitate to seek medical advice to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
