In the intricate tapestry of our well-being, the digestive system plays a central role. As we indulge in the flavours of life, it's essential to recognize that gastrointestinal issues can cast a shadow on our overall health. From the discomfort of heartburn to the complexities of chronic conditions, the impact can be diverse.
We spoke to our expert Dr Subhashish Das, Consultant – GI Oncology (Surgical), Max Healthcare Patparganj, on a journey to unravel the common gastrointestinal issues and explore practical solutions for a healthier digestive experience. Here is what he shared with us.
Common Issues and Solutions for Digestive Health
1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
GERD, a prevalent condition, involves the regurgitation of stomach acid into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and potential damage to the esophageal lining. Timely intervention is crucial to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications.
2. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD)
Chronic conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, both falling under the umbrella of inflammatory bowel diseases, manifest with inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Patients may experience abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss, and complications affecting other organs. Vigilant, long-term management is key.

3. Celiac Disease
Triggered by gluten consumption, celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder damaging the small intestine lining. Malabsorption of nutrients can lead to nutritional deficiencies, impacting overall health. Adopting a gluten-free diet is imperative for those diagnosed with celiac disease.
4. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS, a functional gastrointestinal disorder, presents with symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. While not causing physical harm, IBS can significantly impact the quality of life. Lifestyle modifications and stress management play pivotal roles in IBS management.
5. Peptic Ulcers
Peptic ulcers may develop when the protective lining of the stomach or small intestine erodes due to stomach acid. Helicobacter pylori infection and prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contribute to ulcer formation. Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications.

6. Gastritis
Gastritis, characterised by inflammation of the stomach lining, can be acute or chronic. Infections, certain medications, or excessive alcohol consumption may lead to gastritis. Chronic cases require prompt medical attention to prevent complications.
7. Gallstones
Imbalances in bile composition can lead to the formation of gallstones in the gallbladder. These stones may cause inflammation, pain, and in severe cases, complications such as pancreatitis. Dietary modifications and, in some cases, surgical intervention are essential for managing gallstones.
