The demand for sugary drinks increases in summer. While these may seem like a tempting option in the hotter months, they are not good for health. This is why it is important to choose the right healthy alternative to these drinks – the ones that can keep you hydrated without spiking your blood sugar levels.

To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Geetika Chopra, Celebrity Holistic Nutritionist, New Delhi.

6 Healthy Drink Alternatives to Sugary Drinks

Dr Chopra shares that during summer, many people rely on soft drinks, packaged juices, and energy drinks for hydration. “But these beverages are often loaded with refined sugar, artificial flavours, and empty calories. I always tell my clients that excessive sugary drinks not only increase the risk of weight gain and insulin resistance, but also worsen dehydration and inflammation in the body. Instead, choose drinks that hydrate, replenish electrolytes, and support metabolism naturally,” explains the expert.

Dr Chopra recommends these 6 healthier alternatives for sugary drinks:

1. Coconut Water

One of the best natural electrolyte drinks for summer. It helps maintain hydration, supports mineral balance, and reduces fatigue caused by excessive heat.

2. Lemon Water with Rock Salt

A simple homemade hydration drink that provides vitamin C and helps replenish sodium lost through sweating.

3. Chaas (Buttermilk)

Excellent for gut health and digestion. Adding roasted jeera and mint makes it even more cooling and digestive-friendly.

4. Infused Water (Cucumber, Mint, Lemon)

Helps increase water intake naturally while providing refreshing flavour without added sugar.

5. Unsweetened Iced Green Tea

Rich in antioxidants and can support metabolism when consumed without sugar syrups.

6. Amla or Mint Cooler

Provides antioxidants, vitamin C, and cooling benefits that support immunity and reduce summer fatigue.

A 2019 study, published in the American Diabetes Association, stated that avoiding sugary drinks minimised risks of cardiovascular diseases and early death in individuals with diabetes. It stated that replacing one daily sugary drink with a non-sugary alternative minimised the risk of early death by up to 18% and cardiovascular-related death by 24%. The findings examined an average of 18.5 years of health data from more than 15,000 middle-aged and older adults with diabetes who reported what they drank.
