Can Sudden Summer Showers Make You Sick? Expert Answers

Don't let unexpected rain ruin your health. Discover expert answers on whether sudden summer showers make you sick and learn how to boost your immunity.

Summer is here. Yet, many parts of India are witnessing unexpected rains. These sudden showers during hotter months can pose several health risks. Wondering how? Read to know all about it.

To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Brunda M S, Senior Consultant,  Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

How Sudden Showers in Summer Impact Health

Dr Brunda says that sudden showers in summer do not directly make you sick, but they can increase the chances of falling ill. She further explains, “If your body is not protected properly, getting drenched in rain can lower your body temperature quickly, especially when you are already sweating. This may weaken your immune response for a short time and make it easier for viruses such as the common cold to affect you.”

The expert continues, “Rainwater can also carry dust, pollutants, and germs from the air, which may irritate the skin, eyes, or respiratory system. Moreover, walking in wet clothes for a long time can create a damp environment that allows bacteria and fungi to grow. This can lead to skin infections or fungal issues, especially in humid conditions. Sudden weather changes can also trigger allergies or throat irritation in some people.”
