Sex After A Heart Attack: Expert Shares Right Time And Safety Tips

Wondering when it's safe to have sex after a heart attack? Discover expert advice on the right time to resume intimacy and essential safety tips to follow.

The path to recovery after a heart attack is not similar for every individual. During this time, confusion often clouds the minds of patients regarding everyday activities like what to eat or how much exercise to engage in. One such common query is the ideal time for heart attack patients to resume sexual activity. This article explains it to you in depth, along with safety tips for the same.

To get a better understanding of this, the editorial team of OnlyMyHealth reached out to Dr Sanjay Bhat, Senior Consultant - Interventional Cardiology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

When Can You Resume Sex After A Heart Attack?

One question that patients often ask doctors is – when is the right time to resume sexual activities after a heart attack? Our expert explains.

Sex after a heart attack is a common concern for patients. Many people wonder when it is safe to restart sexual activity. The good news is that most patients can safely return to sex once they have recovered and their condition is stable. Doctors usually advise waiting about 2 to 6 weeks after a heart attack, depending on the severity and recovery. A simple way to judge readiness is if a person can do moderate physical activity like walking up two flights of stairs without chest pain, breathlessness, or extreme fatigue, then sex is usually safe,” explains Dr Bhat.

As per the Cleveland Clinic, how soon one can resume sexual activity depends on what treatment they have received and how their health is overall. If they have had an open-heart surgery, they need 4 to 6 weeks for your breastbone to heal. However, if they don't have surgery, they may be able to have sex as soon as 2 to 4 weeks after their heart attack. Moreover, an individual needs to see for themselves how they are feeling or what their energy level is like, along with consultation with a doctor, to decide the right time to resume sexual activities.

Can Sex Trigger Cardiac Events?

In a 2000 study, published by the National Institutes of Health, researchers analysed whether engaging in sex can actually trigger a heart attack. They discovered that the short-term risk of a heart attack can temporarily double after sexual activity. However, it added that the absolute chance of this event remains extremely low for most people. Engaging in regular physical exercise further reduces this already small risk. The study concluded that having sex is safe and carries very little danger.

Does this hold true for those who have suffered a heart attack as well? Shedding light on this, Dr Bhat explains: “Sexual activity is like mild to moderate exercise in terms of strain on the heart. The risk of another heart attack during sex is very low, especially if the patient is following treatment and taking medicines properly.”

Tips To Ease Into Physical Intimacy After A Heart Attack

The American Heart Association shared some tips for heart patients to practise sex safely:

  • Ask your doctor to evaluate you before resuming sexual activity.
  • If you’ve had heart failure or a heart attack, cardiac rehabilitation and regular physical activity can minimise the risk of complications related to sexual activity.
  • For women, who are contemplating birth control or getting pregnant, discuss it with your doctor first.
  • If you’re experiencing sexual dysfunction, consult a medical professional to see if it can be related to heart disease or to anxiety, depression, or other factors.
  • Drugs to treat erectile dysfunction are usually safe, but they should be avoided if you’re receiving nitrate therapy for chest pains due to coronary artery disease.
  • If you’re a post-menopausal woman with heart disease, you can opt for oestrogen that’s topically or vaginally inserted for the treatment of painful intercourse. Consult a doctor before using it.

Adding to this, Dr Bhat shares the following tips:

  • Choose a comfortable and relaxed setting.
  • Avoid heavy meals or alcohol before sex.
  • Do not rush into it.
  • Manage stress and anxiety, as fear can affect both performance and heart health.
  • Partners should also be supportive and understanding, as emotional comfort plays a big role in recovery.

When To Consult A Doctor

Before resuming physical intimacy, heart patients need to take a few things into consideration. Shedding light on this, Dr Bhat says, “It is important to talk to a doctor before resuming sexual activity, especially if there are ongoing symptoms like chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or shortness of breath. Doctors may suggest a cardiac rehabilitation program to help build strength and confidence safely.” He adds, “Certain medicines used after a heart attack can affect sexual function, especially in men. If this happens, patients should discuss it openly with their doctor, as treatment options are available.”
