Meet India’s First Nurse To Attend COVID-19 Patient

The first case of COVID-19 in India was identified in Kerala in the month of February. Unlike now, this was a completely new virus with almost zero information about the origin, symptoms, medium or spread, prevention, treatment, etc. Even then, the medical team dedicatedly work to revive the health of the patient. Sandhya Jalesh was the first nurse who attended a Coronavirus patient along with the team.

In an interview given to an online portal, Sandhya recalled the moment when she informed her family about treating the first COVID-19 patient in India. She said: "When I informed my family and friends about this, they advised me to step down. But my husband and children gave me their wholehearted support. This helped me took it up with all my heart, one of the most important and unforgettable roles as a nurse."

In real, another nurse was selected for the ward but as she was a nursing mother, the responsibility eventually came to Sandhya Jalesh. Not only she took it up but also served the patient which helped in the recovery within two weeks.

The experience of Nipah Virus helped

Two years ago, when the Nipah virus outbreak happened, Sandhya was a member at the triage whose role was to allot patients' rooms based on their condition. As per Sandhya, that was a one-of-a-kind experience that helped her become more confident and stronger as a nurse. This experience helped her in fulfilling her responsibilities during the Coronavirus treatment.

COVID-19 Experience

The situation is dreary for common people who are locked inside the houses. Imagine the condition of medical professionals and nurses who are exposed to the risk 24*7. They don't even get to visit their houses often let alone meet their family members. Even during such an emotional breakdown, they are being courageous to serve people with the best aid and save maximum lives.

Talking about her experience, Sandhya told the portal, " We were on a high alert and it was a mandate to take precautionary methods. We used to wash our hands every time before entering the ward and after coming out of the ward. We wore masks, special gears for COVID-19 that were designed for the medical staff. We used to wear that heavy, choking PPE kit for hours until the shift gets over. After that, the PPE kits were discarded and we would change masks every hour along with taking a shower before coming out of the ward."

Every nurse is experiencing the same today. Onlymyhealth salute nurses!
