The Right Way To Take Antacids

“The right way to take antacids involves following a few key guidelines. Firstly, it's advisable to read the instructions on the packaging and adhere to the recommended dosage. Antacids can be taken before or after meals or when symptoms arise, but it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional to determine the most suitable timing for your specific condition,” shares Dr Banik.

According to him, it's best to avoid taking antacids with other medications to prevent potential interactions. Additionally, the doctor advises properly chewing the chewable tablets before swallowing them, while the effervescents should be dissolved in water before consumption.

Lastly, if symptoms persist or worsen despite the use of antacids, it's important to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and appropriate management of acid reflux,” he adds.

How Long Before Eating Meals Should You Take Antacids?

The best time to take antacids is before meals. However, Dr Banik says, “The timing of taking antacids before meals can vary depending on the specific antacid and individual needs. As a general guideline, it is recommended to take antacids around 1-2 hours before meals. This allows the antacid to start working and create a protective barrier against stomach acid before food is consumed. By taking antacids in advance, they can help neutralise stomach acid and reduce the likelihood of acid reflux symptoms during and after the meal.”

However, the doctor highlights that the exact timing may vary based on the specific antacid and individual circumstances. It's always best to talk to a doctor and properly follow the instructions provided on the antacid packaging for the most appropriate timing and dosage recommendations,” he advises.

Can Antacids Be Taken Frequently?

Dr Banik shares that antacid medication can be used regularly, depending on the type of antacid prescribed and the individual's needs.

“Generally, antacids should be taken when heartburn or indigestion symptoms arise. It is important to adhere to the dosage provided on the packaging or by a doctor, as some antacids may need to be taken every 2-4 hours, while others may require a specific dosage for daily use,” he added.
