Acid reflux is an occasional yet common condition that affects almost everyone. A more chronic form of acid reflux is known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) which occurs when stomach acid and food flow back up into the oesophagus. This can cause a burning sensation in the chest, neck, and throat, and is often called heartburn.

On the contrary, indigestion is characterised by a range of symptoms, which we will be discussing in detail.

According to the Mayo Clinic, heartburn usually worsens after eating, especially when you're lying down, or when you bend over.

Symptoms That May Help Differentiate Between Heartburn And Indigestion

Heartburn and indigestion may seem similar, but there are certain differences in the symptoms to note.

Heartburn causes a burning sensation in the chest and is a direct result of acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus. Indigestion, on the other hand, is characterised by discomfort or burning pain in the abdomen and can have various causes, including acid reflux.

Indigestion can be accompanied by bloating, excessive gas, and excessive burping, whereas heartburn can lead to painful swallowing.

In both conditions, symptoms can worsen when lying down or bending over. However, indigestion can often cause fullness even after little food intake.

How To Manage And Prevent Both The Conditions

Some of the common ways both heartburn and indigestion can be managed and prevented include:

  • Eating smaller, more frequent meals instead of larger, heavier meals.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
