Many people avoid milk. The reasons can vary from lactose intolerance to other dietary issues. These individuals opt for other alternatives such as almond milk, oats milk or soy milk. Today, we will talk about oats milk, and even compare whether it is a better and healthier option than regular milk.
To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Geetika Chopra, Celebrity Holistic Nutritionist, New Delhi.
Benefits of Oats Milk
According to the Cleveland Clinic, these are the benefits of oat milk:
- Oat milk is dairy-free, so it is a good option for those who have milk allergy or are lactose intolerant.
- Oat milks have added calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B12. These nutrients are crucial for bone health and energy levels.
- Unlike most plant-based milks, oat milk contains natural fibre, which may help lower cholesterol.
- Oat milk is usually free from allergens. This makes it a good option for people with food allergies or sensitivities.
- Oat milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk and other dairy products.
Benefits of Regular Milk
Let us take a look at the benefits of regular milk:
- Bone health: Milk is good for the bones because it has vitamin D and calcium. It can also help prevent osteoporosis.
- Brain health: Many studies have claimed that older adults who consume more dairy products have a higher amount of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, in the brain.
- Blood pressure and heart health: Milk contains potassium; therefore, its intake can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Depression: Milk contains vitamin D, which supports the production of serotonin, a hormone linked with mood, appetite, and sleep.
- Muscle building and weight loss: Milk is a good source of protein, which helps repair body tissues and preserve or increase lean muscle mass.
Oat Milk vs Regular Milk – Which is The Healthier Option?
Dr Chopra shares that the ‘healthier’ milk always depends on a person’s body, digestion, and lifestyle. “If someone tolerates dairy well and needs better protein intake, muscle support, satiety, and stronger nutrition, I usually recommend regular milk because it naturally contains high-quality protein, calcium, vitamin B12, and healthy fats. It is especially beneficial for growing children, active individuals, elderly people, and those struggling with low protein intake,” adds the expert.
The expert continues, “However, for clients who experience bloating, lactose intolerance, acne flare-ups, or dairy sensitivity, I sometimes suggest unsweetened oat milk as a better alternative. Oat milk is plant-based, lactose-free, and easier to digest for some people. But I always remind clients that many packaged oat milks are highly processed and may contain added sugars and stabilisers, so label reading is extremely important. Nutritionally, oat milk is usually lower in protein compared to dairy milk, so the two are not equal from a protein standpoint.”

Conclusion
Experts recommend choosing milk based on your body’s response rather than trends. A food becomes healthy only when it suits your digestion, hormones, and overall metabolic health.
