Struggling With Low Libido? Everyday Causes And What To Do

From stress to lack of sleep, discover the everyday reasons for low libido. Learn expert-backed strategies to naturally boost your sex drive and feel like yourself again.
~

Low libido is often misunderstood as a purely hormonal problem, but in reality it is usually the result of several everyday lifestyle and emotional factors interacting with each other. Sexual desire is closely linked to overall physical health, mental wellbeing, relationship dynamics, sleep quality, and stress levels. When any of these areas are disrupted, libido can naturally decline. Want to know which everyday habits can lead to low libido and what to do about it? Then this article is a must-read for you.

To get an expert view on this, the editorial team of OnlyMyHealth reached out to Mr S Giriprasad, Psychologist, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru.

Common Daily Reasons That Lead To Low Libido

Dr Giriprasad lists down the daily habits that may lead to low libido aka sex drive:

  • Stress – One of the most common reasons behind reduced sexual desire is chronic stress. When the body remains in a prolonged state of stress, it produces higher levels of cortisol. Elevated cortisol can interfere with reproductive hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, both of which play an important role in maintaining sexual desire. Stress from work pressure, financial concerns, caregiving responsibilities, or relationship conflicts can therefore directly influence libido.
  • Sleep deprivation  – This is another major factor. Poor sleep disrupts hormonal balance and reduces energy levels, making individuals less inclined toward intimacy. Research has shown that even a few nights of inadequate sleep can lower testosterone levels in men and disrupt hormone regulation in women, both of which may contribute to reduced sexual interest.
  • Mental Health – Conditions such as anxiety and depression can also significantly affect libido. These mental health conditions alter brain chemistry and may reduce motivation, emotional connection, and physical desire. In some cases, medications used to treat depression or anxiety can also contribute to decreased libido.
  • Poor Lifestyle – Lifestyle habits play a role as well. Sedentary routines, poor diet, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, and obesity can impair blood circulation and hormonal balance, which may gradually affect sexual health. Hormonal changes related to ageing, postpartum recovery, or conditions such as thyroid disorders and PCOS may also contribute.
