The Last-Minute Diwali Glow-Up: Skin Treatments Worth Trying and Those You Should AvoidThe Last-Minute Diwali Glow-Up: Skin Treatments Worth Trying and Those You Should Avoid

Diwali is just around the corner, and many people turn to salon facials, chemical peels, and laser treatments for brighter, smoother-looking skin. While some procedures can improve skin texture and hydration, choosing the wrong treatment at the last minute may leave the skin red, irritated, or peeling just when you want it to look its best.

The key is to choose treatments according to your skin type, the time available before the celebrations, and the amount of downtime involved.

Which Skin Treatments Are Worth Considering?

We asked Dr Himani Mavi, Consultant - Dermatology at Metro Hospital & Heart Institute, Noida, to tell us some last-minute treatments that will make your skin glow like a bulb this festive and wedding season.

Hydrating facials for a quick refresh

Hydrating facials can temporarily make the skin look plumper, softer, and fresher. They may be suitable for people experiencing dryness or dullness, particularly during seasonal changes.

However, results depend on the products and techniques used. Choose a gentle treatment without aggressive exfoliation, especially if your skin is sensitive or prone to acne. Ask the therapist to avoid products that have previously caused irritation.

LED light therapy for selected skin concerns

Professional LED light therapy uses different wavelengths of light to target specific skin concerns. Blue light may help manage acne, while red light is used for certain inflammatory and skin-ageing concerns.

It is generally associated with minimal downtime when performed appropriately, but results are not immediate or guaranteed. It is not a one-session solution for every skin concern, and eye protection should be used as recommended.

Gentle clean-ups for uncomplicated skin

A basic, non-abrasive clean-up may help remove surface impurities and improve the appearance of the skin temporarily. It can be a reasonable option for people who want a simple refresh without intensive procedures.

Avoid forceful extractions, harsh scrubbing, and unfamiliar products. These can cause inflammation, particularly in people with sensitive skin or active acne.

Which Skin Treatments Should You Avoid Before Diwali?

Strong chemical peels

Chemical peels use acids to exfoliate the skin and improve concerns such as uneven pigmentation, acne, and fine lines. However, stronger peels can cause redness, peeling, swelling, and temporary sensitivity.

Even superficial peels may irritate the skin, while deeper peels require considerably more recovery time. Avoid experimenting with a new peel just a day or two before Diwali. A dermatologist can advise whether a peel is appropriate and how much recovery time is needed.

Laser treatments and intensive resurfacing

Laser procedures can help address pigmentation, acne scars, and uneven skin texture, depending on the device and treatment plan. However, redness, swelling, and changes in pigmentation can occur after treatment.

Some procedures require days or weeks of recovery. Certain lasers also carry a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.

If you are considering laser treatment, schedule a consultation well in advance rather than choosing it as a last-minute beauty fix.

Aggressive microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion exfoliates the outermost layer of the skin. Although it can improve the appearance of rough texture, it may cause redness, tenderness, or irritation.

Avoid aggressive exfoliation immediately before a major celebration, particularly if you have active acne, eczema, rosacea, or easily irritated skin.

Unfamiliar facials and home experiments

Trying a new facial, strong retinol product, concentrated acid, or DIY remedy shortly before Diwali can trigger an unexpected reaction. Lemon juice, baking soda, and abrasive scrubs can damage or irritate the skin.

Stick to products your skin already tolerates, and do not squeeze pimples or attempt deep extractions at home.

How to Prepare Your Skin Safely

A simple routine is often the safest last-minute option.

  • Cleanse gently, apply a moisturiser suited to your skin type, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher during the day.
  • Avoid combining several exfoliating products or starting multiple active ingredients together.
  • If you have persistent acne, pigmentation or sensitive skin, consult a qualified dermatologist before undergoing a procedure.

Remember that even a treatment described as having no downtime can cause an individual reaction. If you develop severe burning, swelling, blistering or persistent redness after a procedure, seek medical advice.

Final Word

For a last-minute Diwali glow-up, prioritise gentle hydration and familiar skincare over aggressive procedures. Treatments that address deeper skin concerns are best planned with a dermatologist well before the festivities, giving the skin enough time to recover.
