A New Flight with ‘Khedan Vatan Punjab Dian’: Mann Government’s Sports Policy Makes Punjab Shine, Youth Moving Away from Drugs

The Bhagwant Singh Mann government in Punjab has taken concrete steps to give a new direction to sports in the state. Under the new sports policy, players are being provided with international-level facilities and financial assistance, enabling them to make the nation proud.
The government’s flagship program, “Khedan Vatan Punjab Dian”, has been successfully organized for three seasons so far. This initiative has played a major role in engaging thousands of youth in sports and keeping them away from drugs. A total cash prize of ₹33.83 crore was awarded to 168 players who performed excellently in the Asian Games and National Games. In the Asian Games, gold medal winners received ₹1 crore, silver medalists ₹75 lakh, and bronze medalists ₹50 lakh each.

In the Paris Olympics, 19 players from Punjab represented India, including 10 hockey players. Following the Indian hockey team’s bronze medal victory, eight players were given ₹1 crore each, while two reserve players received ₹15 lakh each. For the preparation of the Olympics and Paralympics, the government also extended financial assistance of ₹15 lakh each to 22 players.

To link sports with career opportunities, the Punjab government appointed seven players as DSPs (Deputy Superintendents of Police) and four players as PCS (Punjab Civil Services) officers. Among them are nine hockey players, one cricketer, and one athlete.

To promote sports culture and keep youth away from drugs, the state has planned to build 13,000 ultra-modern stadiums, out of which 3,083 are under construction in the first phase. A budget of ₹1,184 crore has been allocated for this initiative.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated, “Jalandhar’s Burlton Park has already been developed as a major sports center, and now a world-class sports complex will also be built in Amritsar.” The Punjab government’s mission is proving to be effective not only in steering the youth away from drugs but also in giving them a new direction in life.
