Expert Talks About Erectile Dysfunction And Its Impact On The Mental And Physical Health Of Men

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is characterised by the inability to get or hold an erection for sexual activity. It is not uncommon to experience erectile dysfunction, as it is a prevalent condition and the inability to maintain an erection can happen sometimes, however, it is important to note that repeated ED is a medical issue that can be treated.

According to Dr Rupin Shah, Consultant Andrologist and Microsurgeon, Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai, “While ED is often associated with older men, it is becoming increasingly common among young men as well. According to a study, more than 10 million men in India are diagnosed with ED every year. ED can have a traumatic impact on a man’s mind as it makes him think he is impotent. It can also give rise to intimacy issues in a relationship.”

In addition to this, ED is also a sign of other underlying medical conditions like heart diseases, high cholesterol levels, hypertension, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders, etc.

“Physically, ED could be an indicator of some underlying conditions including heart problems, diabetes, and unstable hormonal levels. It can affect a person's ability to engage in sexual intercourse, leading to frustration thereby affecting intimacy with others. It also could cause a loss of sexual pleasure in men,” explains Dr Shah.

He adds, “Mentally, the effects can be quite severe. ED can cause the feeling of insufficiency leading to a loss of confidence and it can even cause depression and anxiety. This could lower an individual’s self-esteem which can affect a man’s overall well-being and relations with their partner. Performance anxiety can create more stress among patients, resulting in zero desire to participate in sexual activity which leads to a vicious cycle that worsens their psychological state further.”

Dr Shah explains, ”These medical devices are available in two types—semi rigid and inflatable – and are inserted into the penis surgically, which can help patients achieve an erection. The treatment process is safe as it has few complications and risks. Additionally, the implants are durable and most of them have a lifetime of over 20 years. Being an outpatient procedure, it enables patients to get discharged and return home within the same day. Penile implants are seen as an effective solution that enhances not just their physical capabilities but also their self-esteem.”
