Have you ever wondered why men often stay silent about their struggles, especially when it comes to something as deeply personal as infertility? For many, the journey to parenthood is filled with hope, but when challenges arise, men are often expected to stay strong and composed. However, the emotional burden can be overwhelming—feelings of inadequacy, guilt, or isolation can quietly accumulate. Unfortunately, these struggles rarely receive the attention they deserve. Infertility is more than just a medical condition; it’s an emotional journey. For men, breaking the silence and seeking support is a crucial step toward healing and hope.
On this International Men's Day, we spoke to Dr Radhika Potluri, Regional Medical Head & Fertility Specialist, Oasis Fertility, who explained the emotional impact of male infertility and how to offer support.
The Silent Burden of Male Infertility
According to StatPearls, infertility is generally described as a couple's inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. Male factors are the sole cause in about 20% of infertility cases and contribute to an additional 30-40% of cases.
“Despite these statistics, societal norms frequently stigmatise men, compelling them to suppress vulnerabilities. This 'silent burden' can lead to feelings of isolation, inadequacy, and stress, further complicating the emotional toll of infertility,” said Dr Potluri.
The Emotional Impact of Infertility
According to a 2023 study, the occurrence of emotional and mental disorders among infertile individuals is reported to range from 25-60%, which is a considerable proportion. There is a high prevalence of anxiety and depression among these disorders.
Infertility can elicit a range of emotions. Here are some listed by Dr Potluri:
- Shame and inadequacy: Cultural expectations linking fertility to masculinity can erode self-esteem and hinder openness.
- Guilt and self-blame: Men may internalise guilt for their inability to conceive, leading to self-doubt.
- Stress and anxiety: The uncertainty of treatments, coupled with financial pressures, can heighten stress levels.
- Depression and isolation: Prolonged struggles often lead to withdrawal, compounding feelings of loneliness.
- Relationship strain: Emotional and financial pressures can strain communication and intimacy within relationships.
Practical Steps to Support Male Mental Health
- Foster Open Communication: Foster an environment where men feel comfortable sharing their emotions. Open discussions about their fears and expectations can build stronger connections and alleviate emotional pressure.
- Seek Professional Support: Therapists specialising in fertility challenges offer coping strategies tailored to individual needs. Couples therapy can also help enhance communication and resilience throughout the journey.
- Connect with Peer Support: Joining support groups allows men to share experiences, gain practical advice, and feel less isolated. Peer validation can foster a sense of community and understanding.
- Prioritise Self-Care: Activities, such as exercise, hobbies, meditation, and spending time outdoors can alleviate stress and improve mental health.
- Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle: Balanced nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and avoiding harmful substances like tobacco can improve both mental well-being and fertility outcomes.
- Educate and Empower: Understanding infertility and its treatment options can reduce anxiety and enable men to make informed decisions confidently.
Breaking the Stigma: Message From The Expert
Dr Potluri concluded, "Infertility is a medical condition, not a reflection of masculinity or personal worth. Seeking help is a sign of strength, demonstrating your commitment to both your well-being and your journey to parenthood. Men struggling with infertility are not alone, and there are resources available to help them navigate the emotional challenges of treatment."
“Infertility should be approached with empathy, and it’s crucial to remember that mental health is just as important as physical health. Open communication, professional support, and self-care are essential in managing this journey,” she added.
