Majority of the households in India have installed a RO system in their homes, which drains water of many essential minerals, making it less healthy
The significance of a balanced diet has been ingrained into our consciousness since childhood. But do we know the water that we drink daily also plays a significant role in the maintenance of our overall well-being? Even today, many of us believe that we do not need to do anything to treat water. Water from a source may seem clean to naked eyes, but it may not necessarily be fit for drinking. This puts the populace at a higher risk of falling prey to water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera, bacillary and amoebic dysentery, and hepatitis. This affects children severely as their immunity is not developed correctly. As per a recent report published by NSO, polluted water killed seven every day in 2018, two-thirds of Indian households drink untreated and unsafe water, and only about 8 per cent boil it.
Due to the pandemic, people are becoming more aware and are adopting new habits and solutions to safeguard their health and improve their immunity. As such, they are now including alkaline water in their diets, including many celebrities. Many of them have shared how drinking alkaline water is a part of their daily regime, as told by water expert Dr Suresh Sisodia, Sr. Vice President, Havells India Ltd.
What Is Alkaline Water
The term ‘alkaline’ refers to the pH level of water. The pH level of any substance is a number that calculates how acidic or alkaline that substance is! The lower the pH, the more acidic the substance is and anything with a pH of over seven is considered alkaline. A substance with pH seven is deemed to be neutral, i.e. neither acidic nor alkaline.
Water at pH level 8 or 9, is termed as alkaline water as it has a higher pH level than regular drinking water. Due to this very reason, it can help neutralize the acid in our bodies resulting in better health and performance. However, pH alone is not enough to tell if the water is alkaline. Alkaline water must also have alkalizing compounds such as calcium, silica, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate.
Majority of the households in India have installed a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifier in their homes, which drains water of many essential minerals, makes it acidic, lends it a bitter taste and thus make it unfit for drinking.

How To Build Immunity With Alkaline Water?
Listed below are some benefits of having alkaline water, which makes it apt for enhanced immunity during these pandemic times:
- Alkaline water stabilizes the acidic toxins present in the body. An excess of these toxins essentially means that the body will have to work extra hard to maintain its healthy functions- resulting in lethargy and overall weakness.
- It also has a lower Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) which results in antioxidant water, which fights free radicals and delays the ageing process. Hence, alkaline water significantly improves immunity to fight against various diseases.
- Alkaline water is also more easily absorbed by our bodies which ensures a more efficient system of flushing out the toxins and other harmful substances. It is recommended for those who suffer from acid reflux.
- The water also improves the performance of the circulatory system, which means better blood quality and more oxygen to vital organs.
- Some of the other health benefits of drinking alkaline water include strengthening of bones, better skin, and weight loss promotion. All the benefits work in tandem to prepare our immune system and protect us from viruses and bacteria attacks.
Many studies have supported the benefits of drinking alkaline water. As per a study published in the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, alkaline water helps higher longevity in terms of “ageing deceleration factor” as it boosts the survival functions. A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition shows a significant difference in the whole blood viscosity of candidates after consuming alkaline water as opposed to regular water after vigorous exercise. Another study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine posits that the consumption of alkaline water might prevent osteoporosis and protect pancreatic beta cells due to its antioxidant properties. Lastly, research published in Public Library of Science (PLOS) demonstrated that drinking alkaline water improves hydration, enhances acid-base balance and anaerobic exercise performance.
While the pandemic may be a temporary shock which made us watch closely what we eat and drink, we must always be focused on learning about new and more efficient ways to take care of our health. Including alkaline water as part of a balanced diet is just one of the methods by which you can inch towards a healthier lifestyle.
